Telewizja Polska (TVP) is Poland’s national public broadcaster, operating under the official acronym TVP S.A. The broadcaster’s visual identity has undergone several significant redesigns since the 1970s, with the most recent changes reflecting both technological shifts and political transitions.
Design and History
The earliest documented TVP logo was designed by Roman Duszek in 1976, part of his broader work for Polish Television and Polish Television News during that period.[1] Duszek, a pioneering Polish graphic designer known for his visual identity systems, also created the LOT Polish Airlines corporate identity and the Warsaw Metro signage system.[1] His artist statement confirms he received First Prize in the Polish Television Logo Competition.[2]
In 2002, TVP’s management approved a new corporate logo project prepared by the Gdańsk-based firm Grupa A5, selected through a tender process.[3] The new mark was based on the existing TVP1 channel logo, with modified proportions and lettering.[4] The design featured a white “TVP” inscription on a navy background with the full name “Telewizja Polska” below.[3] The goal was to unify the broadcaster’s many separate channel and regional marks into a single corporate identity.[3]
The new identity launched on March 7, 2003, with each channel assigned its own color: TVP1 white-blue, TVP2 white-orange, TVP3 white-green, and TV Polonia white-red.[4] The corporate mark itself used white-navy and silver-navy color schemes.[4] These channel logos were slightly modified in 2011.[5]
In February 2021, TVP announced a new minimalist direction for its channel logos, with the letters “TVP” no longer enclosed in squares or placed on white backgrounds.[6] TVP Sport received the new logo first, debuting it in June 2021 with a lime green color scheme tied to the UEFA Euro 2020 championship.[7] TVP1 and TVP2 received new on-air graphics in September 2021, though their on-screen channel logos remained unchanged.[7] The broadcaster did not continue the rebranding across other channels, reportedly because it was not fully satisfied with the new logo’s typeface.[7]
In May 2024, TVP introduced a refreshed logo on its fleet vehicles, described as a large TVP logotype in a modern, dynamic color scheme featuring orange and magenta.[8]
Meaning and Symbolism
In September 2024, TVP filed an application with the Polish Patent Office to register a new word-and-graphic mark for TVP Info.[9] The new TVP Info logo replaced the previous white-red palette with dark blue and red, featuring a red rounded rectangle separating “TVP” from “Info” and a horizontal bar behind the word “Info”.[9] TVP’s general director Tomasz Sygut stated that the new logo would serve as a symbol of change for the broadcaster, saying “we must get to know each other anew.”[10] The channel officially launched its new studio, graphics package, and minimalist dark blue and red logo on September 30, 2024, with the stated goal of breaking with its reputation as a “propaganda station.”[11]
