CompUSA was an American retailer of personal computers, consumer electronics and technology products, founded in 1984 as Soft Warehouse in Addison, Texas. In 1991, the company changed its name to CompUSA and became publicly traded on the New York Stock Exchange.[1]
Design and History
The CompUSA wordmark was a red, all-caps logo treatment that paired the prefix “COMP” with “USA,” the latter set apart by a distinctive graphic device. According to the trademark filing for the company’s primary logo, the mark featured a series of horizontal lines across the letters “USA,” with the interior of the letter “A” in “USA” shaped in the form of a star.[2]
This same design language carried through related marks. A companion trademark for the slogan “America’s Largest Computer Superstore” described the same horizontal lines across “USA” and the star-shaped “A” interior, with the word “SUPERS” underlined by a tapered line that was larger at the first “S” and narrowed toward the second “S.”[2] A holiday-themed variant, “Super Christmas in the USA!,” used the identical logo format with the same horizontal lines and star detail.[3]
The company’s earlier identity predates the CompUSA name. A trademark for “COMPUSA” filed in 1984 was owned by Soft Warehouse, Inc., the company’s original name, and was registered in 1985 before being cancelled in 2005.[4]
After the retailer’s physical stores closed, the brand saw a later revival. In 2010, Systemax renamed its seven U.S. TigerDirect retail stores to CompUSA, and the CompUSA website carried a “Powered by TigerDirect.com” logo as part of a co-branding initiative.[5]
Meaning and Symbolism
The star inside the “A” of “USA” was the most distinctive symbolic element of the CompUSA mark, as documented in the trademark description.[2] The horizontal lines across the “USA” letters created a striped or flag-like texture within the wordmark, reinforcing the American identity implied by the name itself. No official documentation of additional symbolic meaning has been publicly located.
Typography and Design
The CompUSA logo used bold, all-caps sans-serif lettering, as shown in the trademark drawings and surviving logo files.[2] The specific typeface has not been publicly documented. The mark was rendered in red, as seen in the company’s store signage and logo files, though no official color specification has been published in the available sources.
