Condor Cycles is a London-based bicycle manufacturer and retailer founded in 1948 by Monty Young, who opened the original store at 90 Gray’s Inn Road.[1] The company remains family-run, with Monty’s grandson Sebastian Young becoming Managing Director in 2020.[1]
Design and History
The Condor identity has roots in the company’s earliest days. A reproduction of the original “Condor London Lightweights” logo, first painted on the window of the original store when it opened in 1948, has been used on modern merchandise.[2]
The brand’s classic logo includes a bird graphic, and a vintage t-shirt reissue prints this mark in purple, described as “the colour of our first race team.”[3] The design was inspired by founder Monty Young, who was often seen at races wearing the t-shirt during the 1970s and 1980s.[3]
Condor’s racing heritage has also influenced its visual identity. The Condor Mackeson team of the late 1950s and 1960s used distinctive purple and white colours, and a 60th anniversary jersey featured a specially designed anniversary logo alongside the team name.[4]
Meaning and Symbolism
The condor bird graphic in the classic logo directly references the company name, which was chosen by founder Monty Young.[3] The purple colour associated with the brand’s early identity traces to the Condor Mackeson race team era.[4]
Condor’s current wordmark appears across its product range and website, with the company also using a dedicated SVG version of its logo for email branding.[5]
