The Disney Store is the official retail brand of The Walt Disney Company, operating physical stores, outlets, and e-commerce under a unified name. The first Disney Store opened in 1987 in the Glendale Galleria mall in Southern California, and by 1997 there were 749 Disney Stores worldwide.[1]
Design and History
In September 2017, Disney replaced the Disney Store’s online presence with the shopDisney brand, which offered Disney, Star Wars, Pixar, and Marvel merchandise alongside products from Disney Parks.[1] The retail stores were also renovated with a more modern design at that time.[2]
On February 14, 2024, the shopDisney website was rebranded back to the Disney Store, with shoppers automatically redirected to disneystore.com.[1] Disney announced that all Disney-owned shops, e-commerce, shop-in-shops, and outlets would come under the single Disney Store brand name.[1] The transition included a new logo and an updated look and feel across the website and social media platforms, along with new packaging for purchases and delivery.[1] The website launched with the new logo and a new lead element.[3]
Official branded merchandise released with the returning name included a navy blue pullover sweatshirt featuring the Disney Store logo down the right sleeve and a “D” emblem on the front.[4]
Meaning and Symbolism
A trademark registration for Disney Store describes the mark as consisting of “a word and image that includes an oval and stars,” with design codes referencing stars with seven or more points and geometric figures forming the perimeter of an oval.[5] The registration indicates the mark combines the Disney Store wordmark with an oval emblem featuring stars.
The current logo, used since the 2024 rebrand, is documented in a file on the Japanese Wikipedia as “The logo of the Disney Store used since 2017,” sourced from DisneyStore.com and credited to The Walt Disney Company.[6] The file description notes the logo has been in use since 2017, indicating continuity between the pre-shopDisney era and the 2024 reintroduction of the Disney Store name.
