Frasers Group plc is a British retail group headquartered in Shirebrook, England. Formerly known as Sports Direct International plc, the company changed its name in December 2019 to reflect its expansion beyond sportswear into premium fashion, luxury and department store retailing. The corporate identity adopted at that time uses the Frasers name in a simple wordmark treatment, typically rendered in white lettering on a black background or in black on white.

Design and History

The Frasers Group visual identity dates from the company’s 2019 rebrand. In November 2019, Sports Direct International announced it would change its name to Frasers Group, saying the rebrand was undertaken “to reflect the changing profile and consumer proposition of the group.”[1] The company explained that the new name reflected its “elevation strategy” and the introduction of Frasers luxury lifestyle stores, which would house “the core areas of focus for the wider business: iconic brands, beauty, sports and luxury fashion.”[1]

Shareholders approved the name change at a general meeting on 16 December 2019, with the resolution passing unanimously. The change became effective once Companies House issued a certificate of incorporation on change of name, and the company’s stock market ticker became FRAS from 17 December 2019.[2]

Speaking at the time of the rebrand, Michael Murray, then head of elevation at Frasers Group, said: “The group is evolving dramatically, moving us away from what was our core focus on sports. With the business now looking and feeling so different, with new product ranges, brand propositions and an increased focus on luxury, it was clear that we had to look at our plc brand and assess whether it was appropriate as we elevate the business. For us the logical next step was to change the name and logo to reflect our aspiration.”[3]

The current corporate logo is a wordmark of the Frasers name. Brand asset databases record the identity in black and white, with white listed as a brand color alongside black.[4] The logo is commonly displayed as white lettering against a black background.[5]

In August 2024, Frasers Group applied the Frasers name to its department store chain, rebranding House of Fraser stores to operate under the shortened name “Frasers.” The company said the move was a return to its “Frasers roots,” and the announcement was accompanied by a refreshed logo and imagery of products and store interiors.[6]

Meaning and Symbolism

The Frasers Group identity is primarily a typographic mark rather than a pictorial symbol. The company’s own description of its brand portfolio states: “Frasers is a fearless collection of the world’s most iconic sporting, luxury and retail brands.”[4] The employer brand developed for the group was built around the value proposition of “fearless,” with an initial monochrome aesthetic designed to echo the high-performance feel of the business.[7]

Typography and Design

The Frasers Group wordmark uses a straightforward sans-serif letterform for the company name. No specific typeface, designer or agency has been publicly documented for the 2019 corporate logo. The employer brand visual identity was developed by the agency Wiser over a four-year partnership, which included brand guidelines and a brand toolkit, though this work focused on the employer brand rather than the corporate logo itself.[7]
