Jil Sander is a luxury fashion house founded in 1968 by German designer Jil Sander, with its first women’s collection presented in Hamburg in 1973 and its creative and operative headquarters later established in Milan.[1] The brand was acquired by OTB in March 2021, and Simone Bellotti joined as Creative Director in March 2025.[1]
Design and History
The Jil Sander visual identity is a typographic wordmark consisting of the brand name in spaced capital letters, set in a clean, minimal sans-serif with no icon or monogram.[2] The label has retained the same sans-serif font since the 1990s.[3]
In June 2018, under creative directors Lucie and Luke Meier, the brand introduced an updated version of its logo.[4] The trademark changed only slightly, with the modification focused on the capital letter J, which was redrawn to appear more dynamic and modern.[5] The new logo was published on the brand’s official channels in June 2018, with the campaign credited to photographer Larissa Hofmann, creative directors Lucie and Luke Meier, and art director Heiko Keinath.[6]
In 2025, a condensed “JIL” mark surfaced in the Spring/Summer 2026 collection, the first season under creative director Simone Bellotti.[7] The stripped-down mononym logo dropped the “Sander” portion of the name, a shift described as quieter than the brand’s usual full “JIL SANDER” wordmark.[8] The new mark appeared on shirts and hats in the collection.[8]
Typography and Design
The Jil Sander wordmark uses generously spaced capital letters in a neutral, unadorned sans-serif, with the type itself carrying the brand’s stripped-back aesthetic.[2] The exact typeface has not been officially confirmed; descriptions note it as a custom or undisclosed minimal sans rather than a named commercial font.[2] The brand’s working palette is essentially monochrome, built around black, white and neutral greys and stones, with no official brand hex values published.[2]
