Holt, Renfrew & Co., Limited is a Canadian luxury department store chain founded in 1837, originally as a hat shop in Quebec City. The company’s visual identity has centered on an “HR” monogram, most notably presented within a magenta circle, a format that has been described as the retailer’s traditional logo.[1]
Design and History
Holt Renfrew’s “HR” mark has a documented history dating to the mid-1990s. In August 1996, Holt, Renfrew & Co., Limited filed a Canadian trademark application for the “HR and design” mark, claiming use in Canada since at least as early as May 1995, in association with retail department store services.[2] The application was opposed by cosmetics company Helena Rubinstein, but the opposition was dismissed in July 2005.[2]
The traditional Holt Renfrew logo has been described as a magenta circle surrounding the HR logo, with magenta serving as the company’s signature colour.[1] A separate Canadian trademark record for a Holt Renfrew design filed in 2011 lists the verbal elements “HOLT UNIQUE EN SOI HOLT RENFREW HR” and includes Vienna descriptions for a circle containing letters, monograms formed of intertwined or combined letters, and colour categories including red, pink, orange, white, grey, silver and black.[3]
In 2014, when Holt Renfrew opened its free-standing menswear store, Holt Renfrew Men, the location introduced its own distinct branding: a logo contained within a grey square, with grey shopping bags and packaging, deliberately set apart from the parent chain’s traditional magenta circle logo.[1] The menswear store was re-combined with the Toronto flagship in 2024.[4]
Holt Renfrew has continued to file new logo trademark applications, including one filed in September 2020.[5]
Meaning and Symbolism
The “HR” monogram functions as the company’s house mark, and a 1996 US trademark registration for “HR” describes it as a “house mark for a full line of clothing, headwear, legwear, footwear, belts.”[6] The company’s signature magenta colour has been noted in retail coverage as a defining element of its brand packaging and logo.[1]
