Nisa is a United Kingdom symbol group and wholesale brand for independent convenience retailers, operated by Co-op Wholesale following the Co-op’s acquisition of Nisa Retail Limited in 2018.[1] The brand’s visual identity has undergone two significant changes in recent years, most recently a 2025-2026 modernisation that brought the Nisa look closer to that of its parent company.
Design and History
Nisa traces its origins to 1977, when Dudley B Ramsden and Peter Garvin formed the Northern Independent Supermarkets Association with 30 retailers.[1] The organisation merged with Today’s Group in 1987 to become Nisa-Today’s, later dropping the suffix to trade as Nisa.[1]
A logo used from 2013 featured a black and yellow theme, with the yellow appearing in the dot of the “i”.[2] This identity remained in place for over a decade, through the Co-op’s acquisition of Nisa in 2018.[1]
In November 2025, Co-op Wholesale announced plans to overhaul the Nisa symbol group with fresh branding and a new proposition.[3] The revamped fascia retained a yellow colour as a “nod to the Nisa heritage”, but strengthened the connection with Co-op by using its typeface and a navy blue background.[3] The first store featuring the new modernised fascia went live in Warrington, Cheshire, in February 2026.[4]
Co-op Wholesale Managing Director Katie Secretan said the new look was aimed at bringing the Nisa brand closer to that of Co-op, adding that Nisa “does feel a little outdated” and that modernising the symbol group was important to “stay bold and focused in the market”.[3]
Meaning and Symbolism
The yellow element retained in the 2025-2026 redesign was explicitly described by Co-op Wholesale as a reference to Nisa’s heritage.[3] The navy blue background was introduced to align the fascia more closely with the Co-op brand.[3]
Typography and Design
As part of the 2025-2026 refresh, the Co-op brand typeface was adopted for the Nisa logo.[2] The yellow dot of the “i” was made smaller in the updated logo, with the previous black background replaced by navy blue.[2]
