Safeway is an American supermarket chain operating as a banner of Albertsons Companies, with stores across the Western United States and Mid-Atlantic regions.[1] Its current logo features a stylized white “S” inside a red rounded square, paired with a black wordmark and the tagline “Ingredients for life.”
Design and History
Safeway’s visual identity has evolved through several distinct phases. The company adopted its red-and-white “S” logo in 1962, a mark it has retained in various forms ever since.[2] An earlier version, sometimes called the “S Medallion,” placed the red “S” within a circular frame and remained in use through December 1981.[3]
In late 1981, Safeway replaced the circular frame with two dark-red rounded brackets flanking a sharpened “S.” A 1982 revision enclosed the “S” in a rounded square, a form carried across store signage through the following two decades.[4]
The current mark was introduced on April 20, 2005, as part of a major brand repositioning campaign. Los Angeles agency Bright Design developed the identity, reversing the previous color relationship so that a white “S” sits against a solid red rounded square, above a geometric sans-serif wordmark in black.[4] Bright retained Safeway’s iconic red color while creating comprehensive usage guidelines implemented across nearly 1,800 stores on signage, merchandising, promotions, advertising, and consumer products.[5]
The 2005 launch was accompanied by the “Ingredients for Life” campaign, a roughly $100 million effort that included a new tagline and a “Life Icon” woven throughout the retailer’s communications.[6] Safeway’s logo was contemporized at the same time, with the “S” reshaped into a more dominating form.[6]
Meaning and Symbolism
The “Ingredients for Life” tagline was introduced as the centerpiece of Safeway’s brand repositioning, communicating that the store offers solutions for shoppers across health, value, and national-brand preferences.[6] The “Life Icon” was described by Safeway’s chief marketing officer as the most important visual representation of the company’s new brand promise.[6]
Beyond the documented campaign language, Safeway’s trademark filings confirm the visual elements of the mark: the color red appears in the “S” logo, and the words “SAFEWAY Ingredients for life” appear in black.[7]
Typography and Design
The current Safeway wordmark uses a geometric sans-serif typeface in black, positioned below the red rounded-square “S” symbol.[4] The tagline “Ingredients for life” appears in lowercase letters beneath the wordmark, as documented in Safeway’s trademark registration.[7] The identity system was designed to work across multiple touchpoints, from store signage to advertising and consumer products.[5]
