Twitter, the social media platform founded in 2006, used a blue bird as its primary brand symbol for most of its history. The bird motif was tied directly to the service’s name and vocabulary, including “tweets” and the platform’s early association with bird sounds. In July 2023, under owner Elon Musk, the platform replaced the bird with an “X” mark as part of a broader rebranding to X Corp.

Design and History

Twitter’s first bird logo was not a custom commission. It was a stock illustration created by British graphic designer Simon Oxley, offered for sale on the iStock website in 2006, where someone at Twitter purchased it for about $15. The original design showed a slender bird perched on a branch with Japanese-influenced decorative elements. This early bird was used informally before the company adopted a more polished version in 2010, when the bird, nicknamed “Larry the Bird,” appeared alongside the Twitter wordmark. The nickname referenced NBA legend Larry Bird. [1] [2]

The most recognized version of the Twitter bird debuted in June 2012. Twitter’s creative director Doug Bowman announced the redesign on the company blog, explaining that the new bird was “crafted purely from three sets of overlapping circles,” which he said was meant to reflect how networks, interests and ideas connect and intersect. Bowman also stated that the bird in flight represented “freedom, hope and limitless possibility.” The 2012 announcement eliminated the wordmark entirely, with Bowman declaring, “Twitter is the bird, the bird is Twitter.” [3] [4]

The 2012 bird was designed by Martin Grasser, working alongside Todd Waterbury and Angy Che. The final design was one of 24 options presented to Twitter co-founder Jack Dorsey, who selected it almost immediately. Grasser later explained that the logo was constructed from 15 overlaid circles, a method he said aided legibility at small sizes. “With a logo, something that small, you want repetitive shapes and forms,” Grasser told Fast Company. “It makes it easier for the human eye to understand, and it’s less cluttered.” [5]

Twitter’s brand guidelines for the 2012 bird were strict. The bird had to face right, could not be rotated, animated, duplicated or recolored, and required at least 150 percent buffer space around it. Speech bubbles or words around the bird were prohibited. [4]

In July 2023, Elon Musk announced the end of the bird. On July 24, 2023, Twitter removed the blue bird logo and adopted an “X” as its official logo. Musk tweeted that x.com redirected to twitter.com and that the company would “bid adieu to the Twitter brand and, gradually, all the birds.” The X mark was described by Musk as an “interim X logo” that would be refined over time. The new mark closely resembled the Unicode character U+1D54F, the mathematical double-struck capital X. [5] [6]

Meaning and Symbolism

Documented symbolism for the Twitter bird comes primarily from two sources. Doug Bowman’s 2012 announcement described the bird as crafted from three sets of overlapping circles, “similar to how your networks, interests and ideas connect and intersect with peers and friends.” He also called a bird in flight “the ultimate representation of freedom, hope and limitless possibility.” [4]

Martin Grasser, the designer of the 2012 mark, said the circles were also meant to symbolize Twitter’s aim of democratizing information and giving everyone a voice. He described the design process as focused on “underlying neutrality and simplicity.” [5] [7]

The bird’s visual language extended beyond the logo itself. The platform’s vocabulary, including “tweets” and the verb “to tweet,” became inseparable from the bird identity, reinforcing the connection between the mark and the service’s core function of short, rapid communication. [5]

Typography and Design

The 2012 Twitter bird was constructed entirely from 15 overlapping circles, a geometric method Grasser said improved legibility at small sizes. Grasser described the construction method as the driving force behind the shape: “Once you agree on the construction method, that is really what’s driving the shape.” He noted that the bird’s charm came from being “constructed by that single shape.” [7] [5]

Grasser’s background was in type design, which informed his approach to the bird’s form. He explained that his interest lay in “how form and shapes work at very small sizes and optical corrections that you can make to allow for clarity of shape.” The design process involved sketching countless bird variations, including different configurations of circles, before arriving at the final mark. [7]

The X logo that replaced the bird in 2023 was a stark departure. The mark was a white X on a black background, and it appeared nearly identical to the Unicode character U+1D54F. Musk called it an “interim X logo” and suggested it would be refined over time. [5] [8]
