Threads is Meta’s text-based social platform, launched in July 2023 as a companion to Instagram. Its visual identity has undergone one significant refresh, announced in May 2026, which was designed to help the platform step out of Instagram’s shadow and establish a standalone brand presence.
Design and History
When Threads launched in 2023, its logo was a stylized “@” symbol rendered as a continuous, unbroken line. Instagram head Adam Mosseri explained at the time that the mark was inspired by the classic internet symbol, representing a user’s username, individuality and voice, with the uninterrupted line inspired by the loop that occurs when a thread begins.[1] The original logo was not hand-drawn by an artist but was based on Instagram Sans, Instagram’s proprietary typeface created by Colophon Foundry in 2022, giving the mark a form between circular and square.[1][2] The in-house Instagram design team led the project, with designer Jez Burrows drawing the “@” logo.[2]
In May 2026, Threads introduced a refreshed logo and wordmark, rolling out to users on May 11.[3] Threads design lead Christopher Clare announced the update, noting that nearly three years had passed since Threads launched “essentially as a side project of Instagram” and that the brand was due for an update reflecting “a new, standalone era.”[4] Clare explained that the previous branding carried DNA from Instagram Sans with similar weight and geometry, which felt “inherited rather than distinct” and “static.”[4]
The 2026 refresh was developed in collaboration with London-based design agency Studio NARI.[5][6] The new logo retains the stylized “@” symbol but is more curved and tilted to one side, drawn as a single continuous line with no breaks or separate strokes.[7] Clare described the single-line construction as a deliberate decision reflecting the fluidity of conversations on Threads, noting the form leans forward and is simplified for clarity at small sizes such as app icons and notification badges.[7]
Meaning and Symbolism
The 2026 redesign introduced italic styling across both the logo and wordmark. Clare explained that the team landed on italics “because it leans forward, a match for the forward-thinking energy of conversations on Threads.”[4] The increased weight was intended to set the logo apart from Instagram and help it hold its own next to other app icons.[4]
Studio NARI developed a construction principle for the identity called the “Trending Chisel,” inspired by chisel-tip markers and the behavior of highlighting what matters now.[8] Directional cuts and controlled contrast were built into the letterforms to translate cultural immediacy into the structure of the logotype.[8] The continuous single-line logo was intended to signal that conversation on Threads never stops.[9]
Typography and Design
The original Threads wordmark was set in Instagram Sans, the typeface inherited from Instagram.[6] The 2026 redesign replaced this with a bespoke wordmark created by Studio NARI, freeing Threads from Instagram Sans and giving the platform a more distinct voice.[6] The new wordmark features forward-leaning italic letters with angular, chiseled terminals.[7] The letter “a” in the wordmark was also changed from a two-story form with an upper hook to a simpler, rounded single-story “ɑ,” a subtle change that more closely echoes the iconic “@” symbol.[10]
