Vanta is a trust management platform founded in 2018 that automates security compliance for standards such as SOC 2, HIPAA and ISO 27001 [1]. The company’s visual identity centers on a typographic wordmark paired with a llama mascot named Ilma, a combination that deliberately departs from conventional security-industry imagery [2].
Design and History
Vanta’s current brand identity was unveiled on April 4, 2023, created in partnership with the design studio Moving Brands [3]. The rebrand introduced a new wordmark, typography system and an official mascot, Ilma the llama, whose name means “resolute protector” in German [3].
The llama had been part of Vanta’s brand before the 2023 refresh. In a September 2021 company blog post, Vanta explained that llamas are used as livestock guard animals, making them a fitting symbol for continuous security monitoring [4]. The company deliberately chose a living creature over padlocks or other standard security imagery to feel “more fun and friendly” than typical security branding [4]. Moving Brands later identified “a genuine warmth, quirkiness and edge” in Vanta and put Ilma at the heart of the new brand system [5].
The 2023 redesign also softened the wordmark and opened up space in the letters for better legibility and visual continuity [3]. The full logo lockup places Ilma next to the wordmark, while the wordmark can be used alone when space is limited or when Ilma already appears in a layout [2]. Ilma also serves as the company’s favicon for square or circular formats [2].
Meaning and Symbolism
Vanta’s choice of a llama as its mascot is rooted in the animal’s real-world role as a livestock guard. Llamas bond quickly with livestock, are protective of the weakest members of a herd, and require almost no guidance to act as an effective security alarm [4]. Vanta’s co-founder and CEO Christina Cacioppo said the company wanted “a mascot that embodied Vanta: protective, intelligent, multifunctional, cost efficient, and memorable” [4].
Purple has been a consistent anchor of the brand. According to Vanta, “purple captures the intensity with which we take our security mission as well as the tranquility customers feel when using our products” [3]. The 2023 refresh updated the purple to “pop in digital environments” and added supporting colors, with the palette designed to meet WCAG 2.0 Level AA accessibility standards [3].
Typography and Design
Vanta’s brand typography pairs two typefaces: Nib, a serif described as “a modern take on a traditional serif font that uses both soft and sharp lines,” and Atak, a sans serif [6]. Nib is used for expressive moments and headers, while Atak serves functional purposes and body copy [6]. The company’s stated preference for serif typography was kept intact in the 2023 redesign [3]. When brand fonts are unavailable, Domine and Helvetica serve as substitute typefaces [6].
The broader visual language includes a “fur crop” graphic element derived from Ilma’s fur, used to subdivide layouts or contain imagery, along with two sets of iconography: an expressive set for larger-scale communication and a functional monolinear set for small-scale use [7].
