Alabama A&M University’s athletic teams, the Alabama A&M Bulldogs, compete in NCAA Division I as members of the Southwestern Athletic Conference. The university’s visual identity is built around a family of marks that includes the Interlock (institutional logo), the Bulldog (spirit and athletics logo), the Wordmark, and the Seal, which is reserved for University Registrar and Presidential use.[1]
Design and History
For over two decades, from roughly 2002 until 2023, the athletics program’s primary mark was an interlocking AAMU logo in maroon, composed of large overlapping AU letters with a smaller AM inside.[2]
In September 2021, Alabama A&M introduced a new front-facing bulldog head logo featuring bent ears and a collar with AAMU letters in maroon and white.[3] The mark was revealed at a September 11, 2021 event honoring the football and men’s tennis championship teams.[4] The bulldog head design was promoted to primary status in 2023 with a darker shade of maroon.[5]
In September 2024, the university reintroduced an updated version of its traditional standing “Butch” logo as an approved alternate mark for spirit and licensed apparel use. The traditional emblem had been retired from the university’s licensing program. The refreshed design maintains the traditional form while implementing changes to modernize and increase functionality across platforms. The mark does not replace the AAMU Athletics mark.[6]
The university partnered with Joe Bosack & Co. for the Butch logo refresh project.[6]
Regarding the origin of the university’s logo, an account from former AAMU printer and industrial technology educator Joe Hudson credits the late Arthur A. Burks, Sr. with conceptualizing the logo, draftsman and designer George O. Jones with placing that concept on paper, and Dr. Theo Weir with building the physical logo structures seen on campus.[7]
Meaning and Symbolism
The university’s brand guidelines identify the Bulldog as the spirit and athletics logo within the broader logo family.[1] The current athletics mark depicts a front-facing bulldog head with a collar bearing the AAMU letters.[5]
Typography and Design
The university’s official typography family includes The Neue Black VF, a sans-serif typeface reserved primarily for headlines in all caps, and Migra, an expressive typeface used in headlines and as the primary typeface for the ampersand. Supporting fonts include Neue Haas Grotesk Display Pro, Avenir, Georgia, and GT America.[1]
The official AAMU Maroon color is specified as Pantone 7421C, with CMYK values of C0 M77 Y54 K62 and hex code #61162D. White and Rich Black are the other two primary brand colors.[1]
