The Elon Phoenix are the athletic teams of Elon University in Elon, North Carolina. The athletics visual identity has undergone two significant updates since the Phoenix nickname was adopted in 2000, most recently in August 2026 when the department shifted its primary marks to the monogram “E” and the Elon wordmark, with a redesigned Phoenix mascot serving as a supporting element.[1]
Design and History
The Phoenix identity dates to May 9, 2000, when Elon College announced it would replace the long-time Fightin’ Christians nickname. The Phoenix was chosen from more than 125 community suggestions because of its connection to the college’s recovery from a 1923 fire that destroyed the campus main building.[2] SFX Sports Group, an international sports marketing firm based in New York, was hired as a consultant and produced the primary graphic symbol unveiled that day.[2][3] The original primary mark created a flying Phoenix formed in the shape of the letter E.[2]
In March 2016, Elon updated its visual identities for the first time in more than 15 years. The athletics marks integrated the flying Phoenix symbol with the words Elon and Phoenix in a new font called Tautz.[4] The updated marks were developed by Elon’s Office of University Communications, with primary work by Garry Graham, associate director of design.[4] The redesign also introduced a stylized “E” monogram, a modern version of the block letter E used throughout Elon’s history, most prominently by the athletics “E Club” dating to the early 20th century.[5]
On August 17, 2026, Elon Athletics unveiled a new visual identity centered on the monogram “E” and the Elon wordmark as primary marks, creating a more direct visual connection between athletics and the university. The system introduced a redesigned Phoenix mascot, including full-body and head marks, as supporting elements.[1] The redesigned Phoenix draws inspiration from Elon’s original mascot while giving the character a sharper, more athletic appearance, with a focused expression and forward-leaning stance.[1]
Meaning and Symbolism
The Phoenix mascot symbolizes Elon’s triumphant recovery from the 1923 fire that destroyed the campus main building. As described by Elon President Leo M. Lambert at the 2000 unveiling, “Like the legendary Phoenix, which rises from its own ashes with new life and vigor, Elon College was shaped by the fire, emerging as a stronger institution.”[2]
The 2026 redesigned Phoenix includes specific historical references: a gold sweater with a monogram “E” that pays tribute to Elon’s original Fightin’ Christians mascot, and flame accents on the shoes connecting to the fire that has long been part of the university’s identity.[1]
Elon’s university shield, adopted in 2016, features a stylized flame-leaf icon. Half of the icon is shaped like an oak leaf, referencing that Elon is the Hebrew word for oak and that the college was founded in a grove of oak trees in 1889. The other half is made up of flames, symbolizing the 1923 fire.[6]
Typography and Design
The 2016 athletics marks introduced the Tautz font, which became the font used on team uniforms and other athletics-related materials.[4] The monogram “E” is a stylized letter in maroon and gold using a modified version of the Tautz font.[5]
Elon’s official colors are maroon and gold, adopted circa 1910. The primary maroon is Pantone 188 (hex #73000a), and the gold is Pantone 872 metallic or Pantone 7503 non-metallic (hex #b59a57).[7] The university’s institutional wordmarks use the Bembo font, which Elon has used since the 1990s.[6]
