Atalanta Bergamasca Calcio, the Serie A club from Bergamo known as La Dea (The Goddess), unveiled a new crest on 22 May 2026 that returns to a circular format inspired by the badge worn from 1981 to 1993. The redesign, which will debut on kits for the 2026-27 season, places the profile of the mythological huntress Atalanta at the centre of an entirely blue background enclosed by a black circle.[1][2]
Design and History
Atalanta’s first crest, from 1907, was a shield with horizontal stripes and the club name at the top.[3] The club originally wore black and white stripes; the merger with local club Bergamasca in 1920 brought blue into the palette in place of white.[4]
The silhouette of La Dea first appeared in the club crest in the 1960s, following the club’s first Coppa Italia triumph in 1963, and has remained the defining symbol of the club ever since.[1][4] In the 1980s, the badge took a circular form featuring the head of Atalanta with black and blue colours.[5] The name “Atalanta” was dropped from the crest during this period.[5]
In 1993, a new version was introduced featuring an outer ellipse, the reintroduced club name above the silhouette, the founding year 1907 below, and the goddess’s head tilted back.[3] This oval badge, with a background split diagonally between blue and black, remained in use for 33 years until the 2026 redesign.[6]
The new crest, presented on the second anniversary of the club’s 2024 Europa League final victory, draws inspiration from the circular shape of the 1980s badge, reimagined through a precise geometric construction.[1] The guiding principle of the redesign was subtraction: removing unnecessary elements to give greater prominence to La Dea, who once again becomes the visual focal point of the badge without additional text or ornament.[1]
Meaning and Symbolism
The club takes its name from Atalanta, the heroine of Greek mythology, and is nicknamed La Dea (The Goddess).[7] The silhouette of the goddess in a running pose, with flowing hair, has been a constant presence in the crest since the 1960s.[4]
In the 2026 redesign, the hair of La Dea was redesigned into five strands, a deliberate tribute to the five founders who gave life to the club in 1907.[1] The background is entirely blue, enclosed within a black circle, using only the club’s traditional colours.[1]
Typography and Design
The 2026 crest removes the wordmark “Atalanta” and the founding year “1907” that appeared in the previous oval badge, leaving the silhouette of La Dea as the sole graphic element within the circular frame.[6] The design and creative development of the new crest was handled by Pernice Comunicazione, the exclusive communication studio of Atalanta.[8]
