The Baie-Comeau Drakkar is a junior ice hockey team based in Baie-Comeau, Quebec, competing in the Quebec Maritimes Junior Hockey League (QMJHL). The franchise was granted for the 1997-98 season, and the team name refers to a drakkar, a type of Viking longship.[1]
Design and History
The Drakkar’s primary logo dates to the team’s founding in 1997 and has remained in continuous use since that time.[2] The mark depicts a Viking longship, consistent with the team’s drakkar namesake.[1]
In March 2016, the club unveiled a special logo to commemorate the team’s 20th anniversary. The anniversary logo featured the dragon motif in a “20th anniversary mode” and was incorporated into the team’s uniforms for the celebratory season.[3]
Over the years, the team has also used alternate marks. One alternate logo, used from 1999-2000 through 2008-09, was a dragon head motif taken from the ship head of the primary logo.[4] Another alternate, used from 2005-06 through 2008-09, rendered the Drakkar name in a classic baseball-style script.[5]
Meaning and Symbolism
The team’s identity is rooted in the drakkar, a type of longship used by Vikings.[1] The dragon head featured in the primary and alternate logos reflects the carved dragon or serpent figureheads commonly associated with Viking longships.[4]
The team’s colors are documented as red, white and gold.[1]
