The Big 12 Conference is an NCAA Division I collegiate athletics conference that has used a Roman numeral “XII” as the central element of its visual identity since its founding in the mid-1990s. The conference’s marks have evolved through at least two major redesigns, most recently tied to its 2024 expansion to 16 member institutions.
Design and History
The Big 12 Conference’s original logo, introduced in 1996, featured the Roman numerals “XII” in silver-gray with the words “Big 12 Conference” running through the numerals in red text.[1] League representatives first saw this “formal logo” during meetings in May 1996.[1]
In 2014, the conference launched a new logo that retained the Roman numeral “XII” but presented it in a more stylized and curved form compared to the older, rectangular mark.[2] The rebranding process took roughly two years with the help of GSD&M, an Austin, Texas-based advertising firm, at a cost of $415,000 for design and implementation at the league offices.[3] The new logo was introduced at the 2013 Big 12 Media Days and officially rolled out on July 1, 2014.[4][5]
Commissioner Bob Bowlsby described the 2014 mark as one that “integrates the league’s iconic heritage with a progressive new look.”[5] The logo came in three primary formats and was accompanied by a comprehensive style guide, the first in league history, standardizing where the mark could appear on uniforms, fields and venues.[6][3]
In October 2022, the conference brought in Translation, an independent creative agency, to modernize the brand.[7] Commissioner Brett Yormark announced at the 2023 Big 12 Media Days that an entirely new logo would launch in 2024.[8] The new branding was revealed in August 2024 as part of the “What’s Next” campaign, celebrating the conference’s expansion to 16 teams.[7]
Meaning and Symbolism
Despite the conference having only 10 members when the 2014 logo was introduced, the “12” was retained. Commissioner Bob Bowlsby explained that the mark “isn’t as much a numerical representation as it is expected to be an iconic logo,” adding, “This is really intended to be an iconic piece of art as much as it is a numerical representation of our membership.”[3] One goal in creating the new logo was to give the “12” its own identity as a number that was not a “literal representation” of the number of teams in the league.[9]
The 2024 brand refresh introduced a secondary, sport-specific logo system spanning 18 sports and the conference’s 16 member institutions, featuring a refreshed color palette that incorporates each school’s colors.[7]
Typography and Design
The 2014 logo featured white lettering with a red outline, a change from the previous gray lettering, and removed the red banner that read “Big 12 Conference” on the older design.[10] Both the old and new logos featured the Roman numeral “XII.”[10] The 2014 identity also introduced a system allowing each member school to use the logo in its own color scheme.[11]
