AaB Fodbold is the football division of Aalborg Boldspilklub af 1885, a Danish sports club based in Aalborg. The club’s visual identity centers on a circular badge featuring the “AaB” initials, a mark the club has used in its current form since 2000.[1]
Design and History
AaB was founded on 13 May 1885 by English engineers who were building Jutland’s railway system, and the club’s early years were devoted to cricket.[2] The club’s official website offers the current logo in several variants, including full color, white outline, red outline, and black outline versions, available for download in vector and PNG formats.[3]
The current AaB mark has been in use since 2000.[1] A former logo of the club is documented on Wikipedia as an earlier version of the Aalborg Boldspilklub crest.[4]
In 2020, to mark the club’s 135th anniversary, AaB released an away shirt featuring a reproduction of the club’s first hand-drawn logo in a red outline on the chest, with the same logo appearing as a discreet watermark on the back of the shirt. The year 1885, when AaB was founded, was printed inside the collar.[5]
For the 2024-25 season, marking the club’s 140th anniversary in 2025, AaB introduced a special jubilee logo on its red-and-white striped home shirt. This anniversary mark depicted the landmark with two cricket bats that once towered over the club’s old clubhouse at Eksercerpladsen in Aalborg, a reference to the club’s origins as a cricket club. The initials from AaB’s logo were also woven into the shirt’s stripe pattern.[2]
Meaning and Symbolism
The “AaB” monogram represents the club’s initials, derived from Aalborg Boldspilklub. The double “a” reflects the traditional Danish spelling of Aalborg, which was used before the letter “å” was introduced into the Danish alphabet.[6] The club is also known as AaB for short, a reference that appears directly in connection with its logo.[7]
The club’s historical flag, bearing the inscription “AAB af 1885,” flies daily over the clubhouse at AaB’s training facility on Hornevej and is raised each year at the club’s flag-raising ceremony. This flag was incorporated into the collar of the club’s 2026-27 shirts as a tribute to the parent club and its clubhouse culture.[8]
