Bilbao Basket, officially Club Basket Bilbao Berri S.A.D., is a professional basketball club based in Bilbao, Spain, founded in 2000. The club is also known as Surne Bilbao Basket for sponsorship reasons. Its visual identity is built around a crest that has undergone at least one significant documented redesign, tied to the club’s tenth anniversary.
Design and History
In August 2009, Bilbao Basket presented a new corporate image and crest to celebrate its tenth anniversary in the 2009/2010 season. Club president Xabier Jon Davalillo explained that the timing coincided with the anniversary and an ambitious season, saying, “we thought it was a good moment to do something more in the club. And within the evolution of the team, we came up with the idea of introducing a new brand.” The new crest was described as having a marked retro air and was presented at the club’s Bilbao Basket Zona venue. [1]
The 2009 redesign was described as a variation of the club’s previous shield, making the corporate image “substantially different” from what the club had maintained since its creation in 2000. The new emblem featured a retro inspiration with a predominance of black and silver, colors that had identified the team’s uniform in the two previous seasons. [2]
According to the club’s official website, Bilbao Basket was founded in 2000. [3] The club’s nickname is “Hombres de negro” (Men in Black), and its team colors are black and silver. [4]
Meaning and Symbolism
The 2009 crest incorporated several documented symbolic elements. In the upper part of the emblem, above a black basketball occupying the center, the motto “2000. Urtetik” (From the year 2000) appears, recalling the club’s founding year. In the lower part, two facing letter “B”s are placed, which were described as one of the identifying signs of the team’s non-game clothing. In the center, emerging from the heart of the shield and over the basketball, the words “Bilbao Basket” appear. The basketball is flanked by two laurel branches. [1] [2]
The black and silver palette was already in use by the club in the season before the redesign, and these colors became the protagonists of the new shield. [1]
