The Erie SeaWolves are the Double-A affiliate of the Detroit Tigers, based in Erie, Pennsylvania. The team’s visual identity has centered on a pirate-themed wolf character since the franchise adopted the SeaWolves name in 1995, a concept that grew out of the club’s original affiliation with the Pittsburgh Pirates. The current primary logo, introduced for the 2013 season, depicts a “pirate wolf” wearing an eye patch and red bandana, positioned above a pair of crossed baseball bats that double as swords, with the team name set in arched text. [1]
Design and History
The SeaWolves unveiled a comprehensive new brand identity system in November 2012, ahead of the 2013 season. The update introduced new logos, colors and uniforms, with the primary mark featuring the pirate wolf character and crossed bat-swords. The new color palette consisted of black, red, yellow, gray and white. [1]
The complete identity system was created by Studio Simon of Louisville, Kentucky. Team President Greg Coleman noted that the club had 18 years of brand equity in the SeaWolves name and chose to “embrace our inner pirates” rather than pursue a total overhaul. [2] The designer, Dan Simon of Studio Simon, had previously worked with Coleman on projects for the Modesto Nuts and Trenton Thunder. [2]
The 2013 rebrand included several secondary marks. One alternate cap featured a black nautical flag with a red letter “E” flying from a baseball bat, a nod to Erie’s role in the War of 1812 and its nickname as the Flagship City. [2] The home and road caps were black with the wolf wearing a bandana, while the batting practice cap was red with the wolf in a black pirate’s cap. [2]
In 2022, the team revived and modified a “Howling Dead” alternate logo, which was worn on Thursdays during the 2023 season. [3] For the 2023 season, the SeaWolves also introduced a special logo designed by illustrators from Marvel Entertainment as part of Minor League Baseball’s “Marvel’s Defenders of the Diamond” event. That logo featured a torso view of a wolf wearing a red jersey and a red bandana with white dots. [4]
For the 2025 season, the team introduced a commemorative 30 Seasons logo featuring a central shield with crossed bone Roman numerals, along with new red jerseys. The jersey wordmark updated the team’s arched lettering for the first time since the 2013 rebrand, introducing a new “S” letterform with decorative serifs inspired by hand-drawn treasure maps and wood carvings. The 30 Seasons logo and red jersey marks were also designed by Dan Simon of Studio Simon. [5]
Meaning and Symbolism
The SeaWolves name and pirate imagery trace back to the team’s original major league affiliation. The franchise was known as the Welland Pirates before relocating to Erie for the 1995 season, and the “sea wolf” term historically described sailors who engaged in piracy. [2] Team President Greg Coleman acknowledged that the club could have pursued a total identity change given that Erie sits on a lake rather than the sea and the Pirates affiliation ended in 1998, but the team chose to retain its pirate theme, citing the brand equity built up over 18 seasons. [2]
The “E” flag secondary mark carries specific local meaning. Erie is known as the Flagship City, a reference to its role in several important 19th century naval victories during the War of 1812. [2]
Typography and Design
The 2013 primary logo features the team name in arched text above the pirate wolf character. [1] The 2025 jersey wordmark update introduced a new “S” letterform with decorative serifs, taking inspiration from hand-drawn treasure maps and wood carvings, and added a capital “W” to reflect how the team has spelled its official name since 1995.
