The Brock Badgers are the varsity athletics teams of Brock University in St. Catharines, Ontario, competing in U Sports and Ontario University Athletics. The team’s visual identity is managed as part of the university’s broader brand system, which describes the Brock Badgers identity as a system of closely related marks including a primary logo, secondary logos, wordmarks and graphical elements. The official brand page also lists a Varsity “B” short form as part of the system. [1]
Design and History
The Brock Badgers primary logo features a badger, the team’s namesake mascot. The university’s athletics department has used a badger as its central symbol, with the mascot named Boomer the Badger. [2] The choice of the badger connects to the university’s name: Brock is an old English word for a badger, and the animal also appears in Brock University’s coat of arms, where it is described as representing tenacity of purpose. [3]
The current primary mark is a detailed, forward-facing badger head. A 2014 review of the logo in the Western Gazette described it as a “heavily detailed badger” that is “stretched to the point of no return,” noting its ferocious expression. [4] The official brand guidelines prohibit rotating, separating, rescaling, reversing or adding elements to the logo, indicating the mark is intended to be used as a fixed, unmodified unit. [1]
In 2016, the department overseeing varsity athletics changed its name to Brock Sports following a merger of the former Athletics and Recreation departments. The university explicitly noted at the time that the Brock Badgers name would remain unchanged. [5]
Meaning and Symbolism
The badger in the Brock University coat of arms is described as representing “tenacity of purpose,” a meaning that carries over to the athletics identity. The coat of arms also includes a torch symbolizing learning and a serpent for wisdom, but the badger specifically commemorates General Isaac Brock, after whom the university is named. [3]
Typography and Design
Marketing materials for the Brock Badgers are required to use Circular as the main typeface, consistent with the broader Brock University brand. [1]
The official Badgers brand colours are documented with specific values. Brock Red is specified as CMYK 0/100/100/0, RGB 204/0/0 and HEX #CC0000.
