The Cal State Fullerton Titans are the intercollegiate athletics teams of California State University, Fullerton, competing primarily in the Big West Conference. The university’s official athletics colors are navy, orange and white, as listed in official team quick facts documents.[1]
Design and History
The Titan Athletics visual identity is managed separately from the university’s academic logo system. According to the university’s official brand site, Titan Athletics marks are “bold and spirited expressions of Cal State Fullerton’s identity” reserved primarily for athletics-related use and merchandising, and they should not replace or be combined with the university’s official academic logos.[2]
The elephant connection dates to the school’s early years. Students selected the nickname Titans in the school’s first year, and the name and the school symbol, the elephant, came together on May 11, 1962, when a collegiate elephant race was held on campus.[3]
In May 2009, university president Milton A. Gordon announced a new campus visual identity featuring an orange tree, mountain imagery and sun rays. That announcement noted that a competing concept had been an update to the existing elephant or “Titan” image. The elephant remained the university mascot, with visual representations continuing primarily in the athletics program, and Strategic Communications and Athletics planned to develop a refreshed elephant icon to join other athletics-related images such as the Fullerton “F” and “Titans” wordmark.[4]
Later in 2009, the athletics department’s proposal for a new logo was approved by President Gordon. The design featured a trumpeting elephant, a shield with rays of sunlight, the Titan name and school affiliation, and was described as an additional image for the athletic department rather than a replacement for existing athletic logos.[5]
The current primary athletics mark, in use since approximately 2020, is a slightly angled “TITANS” wordmark in navy with white and orange outlines. Both the navy and orange shades were changed around 2020.[6]
Meaning and Symbolism
The university’s official brand site describes Tuffy, the Cal State Fullerton mascot, as a male elephant who represents Titan Pride. The Tuffy logo is described as the official mark of Tuffy and part of the Titan Athletics visual identity system, with the “strong, confident elephant mark” conveying pride and strength.[7]
Typography and Design
The official Titan Athletics visual style guide specifies the athletics color scheme as Titan Navy (PMS 540), Titan Orange (PMS 165) and Titan Gray (PMS Cool Gray 5).[8]
