The North Carolina Central Eagles are the intercollegiate athletic teams of North Carolina Central University (NCCU) in Durham, North Carolina. The university’s athletic identity is built around the eagle mascot, a nickname chosen by founder Dr. James E. Shepard, who led the institution from its 1910 founding until 1947. Shepard would explain the choice at the start of each school year, telling students, “The Eagle is no common, ordinary barnyard fowl… while a Sparrow clings to its flock, an Eagle soars alone.”[1] The teams compete in NCAA Division I as members of the Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference.[2]
Design and History
NCCU’s current athletics identity consists of three primary logos: the Flying Eagle, the Eagle Head with NCCU, and the NCCU wordmark. Use of these athletics logos is exclusive to the NCCU Department of Athletics.[3] The university’s logo request system similarly identifies the two eagle-based athletic marks as the “Eagle Head” and “Soaring Eagle.”[4]
The primary athletics logo, in use since 2005, depicts an eagle with wings spread above the “NCCU” initials and “EAGLES” wordmark, with “NORTH CAROLINA CENTRAL UNIVERSITY” spelled out below, rendered in maroon, gray, black, and white.[5] A secondary eagle head mark accompanies the primary design.[6]
Earlier athletics logos featured a strutting eagle figure. From 1969 to 1987, the mark showed a gray eagle wearing a white cape and burgundy sweater with script “Eagles” lettering. From 1987 to 2005, the strutting eagle design was updated to wear a burgundy cape and white sweater with non-serif “NCCU” letters across the front.[7][8]
In April 2018, NCCU unveiled a new university-wide logo as part of a rebranding campaign with the tagline “Discover what’s Central to you.” The new mark, developed with input from focus groups of students, alumni, faculty, staff, and supporters, replaced the previous university name logo that featured a maroon outline of the historic Hoey Administrative Building.[9] The redesign drew criticism from alumni on social media, prompting Chancellor Johnson O. Akinleye to issue an apology and clarify that the older eagle mascot logo would continue to be used for athletics and that the historic university seal was not disappearing.[10][11]
Meaning and Symbolism
The 2018 university logo is composed of six quadrilaterals, stacked three on each side, intended to resemble both the architectural elements of the university’s historic administrative building and the wings of an eagle, the university’s mascot.[12] University officials described the symbol as “both foundational and aspirational,” noting the wings reference “a symbol of pride and achievement.”[13]
The university’s colors are maroon and gray.[2] The NCCU alma mater, written by Annie D. Shepard, references “our colors, Maroon and Gray.”[1]
Typography and Design
NCCU’s official university style guide specifies that the logo may be reproduced in black, white, gray (PMS 423), or maroon (PMS 202).[14] The university’s standards also identify maroon as Pantone 202 and gray as Pantone 423 for institutional use.[15]
