The Dallas Wings are a WNBA franchise based in Arlington, Texas, that adopted their current name and visual identity in 2015 ahead of the 2016 season. The team was introduced on November 2, 2015, at a news conference at College Park Center on the campus of the University of Texas at Arlington, where the new name and logo were revealed by the ownership group Full Court Partners, LLC.[1]

Design and History

The Dallas Wings identity was created by Ben Barnes and RARE Design, who were engaged by the organization to design the new logo for the team.[2] The primary mark features a Pegasus, a mythical winged horse, with the team wordmark laid out across it and a basketball below.[3]

The Pegasus was chosen as a nod to the iconic neon sign that first graced the tallest building in the Dallas skyline in 1934 and now sits in front of the Omni Hotel.[4] The mascot pays homage to Dallas’s iconic red Pegasus on top of the Magnolia Hotel downtown.[5]

At the unveiling, Wings president and CEO David Swatzell explained the symbolism: “What’s a distinction of the Pegasus are those powerful wings that give it its energy and its lift. It’s those powerful wings that ultimately personify what our team is all about and what we want to be, which is an inspirational force.”[6]

The franchise relocated from Tulsa, Oklahoma, where it had played as the Tulsa Shock since 2010. The WNBA unanimously approved the move on July 23, 2015, and the team was renamed the Dallas Wings, a reference to the famed winged horse advertising image atop the Magnolia Hotel in Dallas.[7]

In January 2025, the Wings unveiled a commemorative logo to celebrate their 10th season in Texas. The 10th season logo features one of the wings from the primary mark, along with a neon green, navy blue and light blue color scheme inspired by the NBA’s Dallas Mavericks.[4]

Meaning and Symbolism

The Pegasus in the Dallas Wings logo is directly tied to Dallas history. The winged horse references the neon sign that first appeared on the Dallas skyline in 1934 and remains a recognizable city symbol today.[4] The logo was designed as a Pegasus to pay homage to Dallas’s iconic red Pegasus on top of the Magnolia Hotel in downtown.[8]

The team’s official colors are navy, volt green, blue and cyan.[7] The original logo was rendered in shades of white, cyan and a lime green color known as volt green on a predominantly dark blue background.[7] The blue, silver and green palette was described at the time of the unveiling as an obvious nod to the NBA’s Dallas Mavericks.[3]
