The Davidson Wildcats are the athletic teams of Davidson College in Davidson, North Carolina. In August 2023, the college launched a new logo and visual identity intended to unify its academic, athletic and arts branding under a single mark for the first time.

Design and History

Davidson, primarily identified by the single word “Davidson” since the 1980s, launched a new logo in August 2023 that links the letters D and C, reflecting what the college describes as the combined strength of its community. The letters are paired with the words “Davidson College,” all set in exclusively designed text derived from chiseled engraving. The college said the look is both bold and classic, reflecting the influence of Davidson’s innovation and tradition. That single logo now serves all aspects of Davidson: academics, athletics and arts.[1]

The intertwined D and C motif was not invented for the 2023 rebrand. Versions of the combined letters are etched on the second-story exterior above the main entrance to the Chambers Building and near the apex of the Alvarez College Union, from its previous life as the Johnston Gym.[1]

Alongside the new DC monogram, Davidson introduced a redesigned wildcat image featuring edges and angles reflective of the lettering in the new logo, as well as the familiar wildcat statue across from the Baker Sports Complex.[1] The new wildcat logo removes the red diamond background that had been a staple of the Wildcats’ logo for more than two decades and depicts a more detailed animal from the side rather than the front.[2][3]

The 2023 identity was developed over an eight-month process in which Davidson partnered with an expert design firm, with a diverse group of students, faculty, staff and alumni helping to research, design and refine the key elements of the college’s visual identity.[1] The design firm’s name has not been publicly disclosed in official announcements.

Before the 2023 unified identity, Davidson athletics used a separate set of spirit marks. In August 2010, the college unveiled new athletic marks developed with SME, Inc., a branding company out of New York City, following a yearlong process of creative design and market testing by a campus committee of students, staff, alumni and coaches. That system produced primary, secondary and tertiary marks, a youth mark and a new font specifically designed for Davidson. The primary mark continued the evolutionary track of the existing cat with a diamond behind it, which fans and alumni had strong affinity for. The secondary mark was a “D” with claw marks through it, and the tertiary mark was a paw print in the shape of a “D.”[4]

The 2010 spirit marks did not replace Davidson’s institutional mark, which was the word “Davidson” with a bar and diamond underneath it.[4] The new spirit mark was the ninth Davidson had used since becoming known as the Wildcats following a football game at Auburn in 1917. The most recent mark before the 2010 launch had been in use since 1994.[4]

Meaning and Symbolism

Davidson’s official communications describe the 2023 DC monogram as reflecting “the combined strength of the community.”[1] The college’s design group guided the creative phase to reflect four dynamic strengths that, while potentially at odds, instead help pull the community together: the humility of honoring each other and the confidence to solve big problems; a grounding in tradition that undergirds a spirit of innovation; a competitive drive but to win together; and fierce individualism within a supportive culture.[1]

Davidson has expressed its identity in many ways over the years, including school colors that once were pink and blue, and a variety of logos and wildcat images that have spanned “the cartoonish to the fierce.”[1]

Typography and Design

The 2023 logo uses exclusively designed text derived from chiseled engraving, pairing the DC monogram with the words “Davidson College” in the same custom lettering style.[1] The redesigned wildcat features edges and angles reflective of the lettering in the new logo.[1]

Davidson’s primary brand colors are red, black and white, with red specified as hex code #D42121 in the college’s digital style guide.[5] The default version of the wildcat secondary mark is full color using black, white, red and taupe.[6] The 2023 wildcat logo adds gray to Davidson’s red and black color scheme.[3]
