The Greensboro Swarm are the NBA G League affiliate of the Charlotte Hornets, based in Greensboro, North Carolina. The franchise name and logo were unveiled together on December 29, 2015, at the Greensboro Coliseum Complex, with the team beginning play in the 2016-17 season.[1]
Design and History
The Swarm identity was designed to be closely tied to the Hornets brand. Hornets President and COO Fred Whitfield explained at the unveiling that “Swarm” was chosen because it describes a group of hornets and also refers to a large, energetic gathering, reflecting both the parent club’s identity and the city of Greensboro.[1]
The primary logo features the Greensboro Swarm wordmark above a design of a basketball with a stinger coming out the bottom, an element also used in the Hornets primary logo. A secondary logo uses the letters “GS” with a smaller version of the basketball and stinger.[1] The wordmark resembles that of the Hornets, using the same font, with the city name in smaller letters above the nickname in larger letters.[2]
The wordmark and logos were designed internally by the Hornets creative department.[1] The Swarm name was selected from a few options related to the Hornets, with “Attack” and “Buzz” being other candidates considered.[3]
The team has maintained its original identity since launch, adding anniversary logos for its 5th and 10th seasons. The 5th Anniversary logo, unveiled for the 2021-22 season, was a circular emblem featuring the team’s colors with the Swarm wordmark and “5th Anniversary” text.[4] The 10th Anniversary logo, unveiled for the 2025-26 season, features a bold “10” as its centerpiece with an “Anniversary” ribbon layered behind the hornet stinger.[5]
Meaning and Symbolism
The Swarm uses teal and cool gray as primary colors, with purple as an accent color.[1] The logo features the same pointed font and distinctive stinger as the Charlotte Hornets logo, along with the same teal and purple color palette as the parent franchise.[3] Hornets Senior Vice President of Marketing Seth Bennett said that keeping continuity between the Swarm and Hornets brand was important as the Hornets looked to increase fan support in the Greensboro region.[3]
The 10th Anniversary logo uses the signature teal, purple and cool gray colors prominent in Swarm and Hornets branding, symbolizing the team’s history from 2016 to 2025.[5]
Typography and Design
The Swarm wordmark uses the same pointed font as the Charlotte Hornets wordmark, with the city name in smaller letters positioned above the nickname in larger letters.[1] The shared typography and stinger motif were deliberate choices to create visual continuity between the G League affiliate and its NBA parent club.[3]
