Grupo Desportivo Estoril Praia, commonly known as Estoril Praia, is a Portuguese sports club founded on 17 May 1939 and based in the Estoril area of Cascais, near Lisbon. The club’s visual identity is built around a distinctive inverted triangular crest in blue and gold, a shape that has become the central element of its modern branding.
The club adopted as its emblem and colours the region’s greatest natural assets: the yellow of the sun and the blue of the sea. This choice is reflected in the nickname “Canarinhos,” a reference to the yellow and blue kit inspired by the Brazilian national team. [1]
Design and History
The Estoril Praia emblem is a triangular shield. The upper third is light blue (azul celeste) with a half sun in gold, while the remaining two thirds are dark blue with the group’s initials in gold. [2] The triangular form has been described by the club as a symbol of strength, balance and visual identity. [3]
In recent years, the club’s visual identity has undergone a significant refresh. The creative agency Colure Sports established the foundations of Estoril Praia’s core brand identity, including a refreshed crest, a custom “Praia” typeface, a refined colour system and a comprehensive set of brand guidelines. [4] The rebranding has been described by club marketing director António Nobre as “still a work in progress,” with the brand described as being in an “adolescent phase” that the club hopes will reach maturity. [5]
Meaning and Symbolism
The club’s colours and emblem draw directly from the coastal environment of the Estoril region. The yellow represents the sun and the blue represents the neighbouring Atlantic Ocean. [1] The triangle, described by the club as its iconic symbol, appears prominently across the club’s recent kit designs, with the club stating that “the triangle that we wear on our chest points further. From Estoril to the world.” [3]
In presenting the 2025/26 home kit, the club described the design as representing “the sun that warms us, the blue of our sea, the triangle that unites us,” reflecting the history, values and DNA of Estoril Praia. [3] The away kit for the same season was conceived as a tribute to the Atlantic Ocean, maintaining the triangular pattern while shifting to a predominantly white palette with dark blue accents. [6]
Typography and Design
As part of the brand refresh led by Colure Sports, a custom typeface named “Praia” was introduced for the club’s visual identity. [4] The typeface forms part of a broader identity system that includes the refreshed crest and a refined colour palette, applied consistently across matchday graphics, digital media and printed programmes.
