FC Chambly Oise is a French football club based in Chambly, in the Oise department of northern France. Founded in 1989, the club’s visual identity is closely tied to its founding family’s passion for Italian club Inter Milan, a connection that shaped both its colors and its original emblem.
Design and History
The club was founded in 1989 by Fulvio and Bruno Luzi, along with their father Walter and some friends. The Luzi family, of Italian origin, were passionate Inter Milan supporters, and this allegiance directly influenced the new club’s identity. Walter Luzi, a co-founder, adopted the black and blue colors because of his support for Inter. Fulvio and Walter were the big Inter fans, while Bruno preferred yellow, but the majority choice prevailed. The original badge was a near-identical copy of Inter’s emblem, a resemblance that was widely noted in the press. The Gazzetta dello Sport described the Chambly logo as “practically identical” to Inter’s, with the colors, central emblem, and placement of the founding date all echoing the Italian club. [1] [2]
As Chambly rose through the French football pyramid and gained national attention, the resemblance became problematic. Inter Milan formally asked the club to change its logo. Bruno Luzi recounted that Inter told them, “We are happy that you are supporters, but change it.” [2] The request was also confirmed by L’Équipe, which noted the club changed its badge at the start of the 2016 season due to a formal notice from Inter Milan. [3]
In June 2016, the club unveiled a new logo. The redesign was created by Eric Crémois, a sports photographer and manager of the design company PPF Disign who has worked with the club since 2010. [4] [5] The change coincided with the club’s renaming from FC Chambly Thelle to FC Chambly Oise, adopting the department’s name. [6] While the new mark moved away from the Inter-inspired design, the circular shape and the three colors of the previous logo, black, blue and yellow, were retained. [4]
Meaning and Symbolism
The current badge is a circular emblem. The name “FC Chambly” appears in the upper part of the circle, while “Oise,” referring to the club’s department, appears in the lower part. [7] The center of the logo features black and blue stripes, echoing the club’s kit colors, with the founding year “1989” written in gold letters across them. [7] The black and blue colors themselves trace back to the club’s foundation, chosen by the Luzi family in tribute to Inter Milan. [3]
Typography and Design
The 2016 redesign was created by Eric Crémois, who reportedly designed the new logo during a train journey to a match in Béziers. [4] A specific typeface used in the badge has not been identified in available sources. The lettering serves a clear organizational role within the circular composition, identifying the club name above and the department below.
