Flamurtari FC, officially Klubi Sportiv Flamurtari Vlorë, is an Albanian football club based in Vlorë. The club’s visual identity has undergone several documented changes since its founding in 1923, with the most significant redesign occurring in 2015.
Design and History
Flamurtari’s first crest was designed in 1930 ahead of the club’s first competitive match in the inaugural Albanian Football Championship, and it was designed to resemble the Vlorë Municipality coat of arms. Following the Second World War, the club changed its crest to the shape of a shield, with the initial F in black in the middle of the shield on a red background. In the 1980s, the shield shape was replaced by a circle with an F and half of a double-headed eagle, as found on the Albanian flag.[1]
On 3 August 2015, the club announced that the crest would be changed ahead of the 2015–16 campaign as part of a rebranding strategy, but they faced immediate pressure from fans as well as the local municipality who were unhappy at both the decision to change the crest and the new design. The shield shape was replaced by a circle with an F and half of a double-headed eagle, as found on the Albanian flag.[1]
The 2015 redesign was created by a local Vlorë painter. According to reports, the new logo contains the flag raised by Ismail Qemali in Vlorë, the red and black colors of the jersey, and the first letter of the team’s name. The designer stated there was no crescent moon in the design, calling any such appearance “just a coincidence of the design.”[2] The municipality of Vlorë criticized the change as unlawful, with officials noting the new logo was designed by a local painter and that “Flamurtari has the flag as its base and not a childish F made in the 80s by hand.”[3]
In July 2017, the club presented new kits for the 2017–18 season with a modified logo. Beyond the letter F, the new crest also featured half of a double-headed eagle, and the club simultaneously announced a new technical sponsor, Kappa.[4]
In August 2024, Flamurtari published its kits for the season in the Albanian First Division, and observers noted changes to the logo. However, reports clarified that this was only a design change in the logo’s application on the shirt, as the official emblem would not change.[5]
A further modification to the crest occurred under the presidency of Sinan Idrizi, described as the third time the logo had been modified. The new crest featured emphasized red-and-black colors, with the eagle, the letter F, the club’s founding year 1923, and the abbreviated initials F.FC all in red. Fans reacted negatively, with some critics describing the logo as “made with Microsoft Paint.”[6]
Meaning and Symbolism
The club’s name derives from the Albanian word “flamur,” meaning flag, and the team’s red and black colors are drawn from the Albanian flag.[2] The double-headed eagle motif, a central element of the Albanian national flag, has appeared in the club’s crest since at least the 1980s.[1] The 2015 redesign explicitly incorporated the flag raised by Ismail Qemali during Albania’s declaration of independence in Vlorë, tying the club’s identity to the city’s historical significance.[2]
