GBC Lightning is the athletic identity of Goldey-Beacom College, a private college in Wilmington, Delaware, competing in NCAA Division II as a member of the Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference (CACC).[1] The college adopted the nickname “Lightning” in the 1998-99 academic season.[2]
Design and History
The official colors of Goldey-Beacom athletics are navy blue and Vegas gold, as listed on the department’s quick facts page.[3] The athletic department’s motto is “Goldey-Beacom Athletics…where lightning strikes,” and the college has produced navy blue t-shirts with that motto printed in gold.[2]
The college’s mascot is named “Strike,” and the athletic teams are called the Lightning.[4] The Lightning “Bolt” mascot suit made its return in March 2011 after years in storage, becoming a fixture at Lightning sporting events.[5]
Meaning and Symbolism
According to the college’s official history page, the bolt of lightning in heraldry represents power and speed.[2] The same page notes that the mid-Atlantic region, spanning from Delaware down the coast to North Carolina, has the third highest number of lightning strikes that hit the ground per square mile in the United States, according to the U.S. National Lightning Detection Network.[2]
