The Concordia Clippers were the athletic teams of Concordia College-New York, a private Lutheran college in Bronxville, New York, that closed in 2021. The college competed in NCAA Division II as a member of the Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference (CACC), sponsoring 12 varsity sports at the time of its closing.[1]
Design and History
Concordia College-New York joined the CACC in 2009, adopting the Clippers nickname for its athletic programs.[2] The college’s athletic website, ConcordiaClippers.com, served as the official home for team news, schedules, and live statistics.[3]
The Clippers competed in men’s baseball, basketball, cross country, golf, soccer, and tennis, and women’s basketball, cross country, soccer, softball, tennis, and volleyball.[4] The college’s athletic facilities included the Clipper Baseball Field, Clipper Softball Field, and Clipper Soccer Field.[5]
In January 2021, Concordia College New York announced it would close, and Iona College finalized an agreement to acquire its Bronxville campus.[6] The college ceased offering courses after August 31, 2021, and awarded its final degrees on December 31, 2021.[7]
Meaning and Symbolism
The Clippers nickname references clipper ships, the fast sailing vessels that dominated maritime trade in the 19th century. The name was intended to evoke speed and competitive excellence in athletics, though no official documentation of the specific symbolism behind the college’s logo design has been preserved in accessible sources.
