Club de Gimnasia y Esgrima La Plata, commonly known as Gimnasia, is an Argentine sports club founded on June 3, 1887, in the city of La Plata, Buenos Aires Province. The club’s visual identity is built around a heraldic crest that has remained a consistent symbol of the institution for over a century.
Design and History
The club’s first official seal was based on the coat of arms of the city of La Plata. In 1901, French-born artist Emilio Coutaret created the first heraldic shield for the club, a design that historians say was used until the late 1920s. Coutaret’s work marked the beginning of the club’s distinctive heraldic identity, replacing the earlier city-based seal with a design specific to Gimnasia. [1] [2]
In September 2023, Gimnasia and its kit manufacturer Givova launched the “1887” collection, a line inspired by the club’s origins. The collection featured a recreated emblem generated from the first coat of arms that represented the institution. [3] The reissue used blue as the predominant color with a grayscale treatment applied to the petals of the fencing mask and the lateral elements. [4]
In November 2023, the club released a limited-edition shirt as part of the same “1887” collection, featuring Coutaret’s 1901 drawing updated in a range of blues and grays. [5] The shirt’s embroidered crest was the first one used in the club’s history. [6]
Meaning and Symbolism
The traditional Gimnasia crest is composed of a shield with a helmet at the top and a central monogram combining the club’s initials. The design includes laurel branches on the sides, classic symbols of sporting merit and victory. [7] The club’s colors, white and navy blue, appear in the central monogram. [8]
The club’s motto, “Mens Sana in Corpore Sano” (a healthy mind in a healthy body), is reflected in the name and founding purpose of the institution, which initially prioritized gymnastics, fencing, and parlor games such as chess and billiards. [9] The fencing mask element in the crest references the sport of fencing, one of the disciplines that gave the club its name.
Typography and Design
The club’s official website describes the institutional shield as a central element of its identity, with recent kit designs emphasizing the recovery of historical forms and the traditional silver color of the shield and weapons. [10] On modern kits, the crest has been applied using TPU lamination and thermo-fusion techniques for durability and definition, with the year of foundation readable in the texture. [11]
