Greenock Morton Football Club, commonly known as Morton or The Ton, is a Scottish professional football club based in Greenock, Inverclyde. Established as Morton Football Club on 4 October 1874, the club changed its name to Greenock Morton in 1994 and now competes in the Scottish Championship at Cappielow Park.[1]
Design and History
The club’s crest is derived from the Greenock coat of arms, and some variation of it has been in use since 1978.[2] Before this, from 1964, a simpler badge bearing the club’s name and three stars was used on occasion.[2]
In October 2023, the club revealed a commemorative crest to mark its 150th anniversary. This crest was used on the 2024/25 kits and across a new range of merchandise.[3] The 2024/25 home kit, which carried the commemorative crest, was designed by Morton fan Gavin MacIntosh and incorporated the club’s traditional blue and white hoops with gold highlights.[4]
Meaning and Symbolism
The club’s crest features a sailing ship, a motif taken from the town’s coat of arms that symbolises Greenock’s shipbuilding and maritime heritage.[5] The link between Greenock and Morton is seen directly in this crest element.[5]
