IK Brage, officially Idrottsklubben Brage, is a Swedish football club based in Borlänge, Dalarna County. The club was formed in 1925 when members of the earlier club IK Blixt broke away from a merger and adopted the name IK Brage, after the Norse god Bragi.[1] The club’s colours, reflected in both its crest and kit, are green and white.[1]
Design and History
The club’s crest features crossed Dalarna arrows, a regional symbol with roots in the Dalarna infantry. From the club’s founding in 1925, there was discussion about making Brage a team for the whole of Dalarna, and the crossed arrows were adopted as the symbol to signal that ambition.[2] The crossed Dalarna arrows in the club emblem have been described as revealing the club’s intentions from the start in 1925, to be the team for all of Dalarna.[3]
The original club emblem was designed by a watchmaker named Nilsson, known by the nickname “Uris,” who was from the Sundsvall area and a regular visitor to the club’s home ground, Domnarvsvallen. His proposal for the club badge won everyone’s appreciation and is still in use today.[4]
Meaning and Symbolism
The crossed arrows in the Brage crest are the Dalarna arrows, a symbol associated with the region’s infantry tradition. Their inclusion in the club badge reflects the founding ambition to create a club representing the entire Dalarna province.[2] The club’s green and white colours are documented as being reflected in both the crest and the playing kit.[1]
