K. Lierse S.K. is a Belgian association football club based in Lier, in the province of Antwerp. The club traces its origins to 6 March 1906, when Liersche Sportkring was founded during a meeting in Lier. The oldest preserved photographs already show players in the yellow and black kit that remains the club’s identity today. [1]
The current club emerged from a 2018 restart. After the original Lierse S.K. went bankrupt in May 2018, a group of investors led by Luc Van Thillo took over the licence of Oosterzonen and renamed the club Lierse Kempenzonen. [1] In 2024, after approval by the Belgian football association, the club officially regained its historical name Koninklijke Lierse Sportkring. [1]
Design and History
The club’s crest is a shield divided into two horizontal sections, yellow on top and black on the bottom. A golden crown sits above the shield, and the text “K.LIERSE S.K.” appears in bold yellow letters across the centre of the crest. [2] The crown and shield are elements that also appear in the logos of the successor clubs and of the city of Lier itself. [3]
When Lierse Kempenzonen was formed in 2018, the new team continued with the old Lierse S.K. logo and began playing at the Herman Vanderpoortenstadion in Lier. [4] The club’s official history confirms that the logo, the colours and the stadium were essential elements that returned to the club’s hands during the restart period. [5]
In December 2021, the club announced that its activities had been brought under the NV K. Lierse Sportkring and that the name Koninklijke Lierse Sportkring was being restored, noting that other essential elements such as the logo, the colours and the stadium were already back in the club’s possession. [5]
Meaning and Symbolism
The club’s colours are yellow and black, which appear in both the logo and the home kit. [4] The club’s nickname is “Geel-Zwart” (Yellow-Black). [4]
The crown and shield in the crest connect to the city of Lier’s heraldic tradition. [3] The club’s own supporters also reference the city’s coat of arms: when the SECTOR30 supporters’ section was created in 2022, its logo incorporated the number 30 as a reference to the club’s matricule number, guarded by two Lierse lions, described as “the real Lierse lion that we also find in the coat of arms of our city.” [6]
Typography and Design
The crest uses bold yellow lettering for the club name “K.LIERSE S.K.” across the centre of the shield. [2] No official documentation identifies the specific typeface used in the crest.
