The San Francisco Giants are a Major League Baseball franchise founded in New York in 1883, where they were known as the New York Gothams before adopting the Giants name. The team relocated to San Francisco in 1958, and its visual identity has evolved through several distinct phases while retaining a consistent orange and black palette.
Design and History
When the Giants moved from New York to San Francisco in 1958, they retained the same uniform look as their New York uniforms, replacing “New York” with “San Francisco” and the “NY” cap monogram with “SF” on the cap fronts.[1] The team also implemented new logos using a script “Giants” in orange and black on the uniform fronts.[1]
The primary logo of this early San Francisco era featured the word “Giants” in black script placed diagonally across a white baseball with orange seams.[2] This design remained in use from 1958 through the early 1960s.[2]
In 1983, the Giants unveiled a new nontraditional logo with block-like typography.[1] This version replaced the script wordmark with a bold serif treatment using all capital letters.[3]
In 1994, keeping up with trends, the Giants changed their uniform look, unveiling a more traditional logo similar to those of the Giants’ past.[1] The road jerseys replaced the monogram SF with a spelled-out “San Francisco.”[1]
In 2000, the Giants made minor changes to their primary logo, adding cream tinting to the white baseball to give it a three-dimensional effect, along with a “GIANTS” wordmark in black with an orange outline.[2]
Meaning and Symbolism
The interlocking “SF” monogram that appears on the team’s caps and jerseys has been a consistent element of the Giants’ identity since the move west. The logo designed when the team moved to San Francisco in 1958 has not changed much at all over the decades.[4] The New York Giants logo had consisted of an overlapping “N” and “Y,” similar to the current “SF” layout, in the same characteristic orange and black.[5]
The team’s official colors are orange, black, beige, and gold.[6] The orange and black combination has been part of the franchise’s identity since its New York days and carried through the relocation to California.
Typography and Design
The Giants’ wordmark has undergone several typographic changes. The 1958 era used a script style for “Giants” on the uniform fronts.[1] The 1983 redesign introduced block-like typography with chiseled serifs.[1] The current primary logo, in use since 2000, features a script “Giants” wordmark in black with an orange outline placed in front of an orange-stitched baseball.[7]
