KF Shkëndija, a football club based in Tetovo, North Macedonia, uses an oval crest that combines the club’s name, founding year, and a red-and-black color scheme tied to its Albanian community identity. The club was founded on 27 August 1979 by ethnic Albanians in Tetovo.[1]
Design and History
The current badge is an oval crest with a black outer border and a white upper field reading “KF Shkëndija.” A central black-and-white football sits above red-and-black vertical stripes in the lower half, with a red banner beneath carrying “Tetovë 1979.” A gold star sits above the badge.[2]
The name Shkëndija means “spark” in Albanian, while “Tetovë” links the badge to the club’s home city of Tetovo.[2] The red-and-black colors have been central to the club since its foundation and are closely associated with the Albanian community identity behind Shkëndija.[2]
A proposed revised version of the logo was presented as a design concept, correcting perceived errors in the existing crest. According to the designer’s description, the revision altered the font for greater legibility, reduced the black stripes from six to four, and updated the soccer ball to a more modern design. The star, retained from the old crest, was described as representing the club’s achievement of winning the Macedonian First Football League in 2011.[3]
Meaning and Symbolism
The four black stripes in the proposed revision were described as representing four popular tourist destinations in Tetovo, including the fortress.[3] The star above the badge reflects the club’s domestic title success, with Shkëndija becoming one of North Macedonia’s leading clubs in the modern era.[2]
