The J3 League is the third division of the Japan Professional Football League (J.League), launched in 2014. Its visual identity has always been tied to the parent J.League symbol, evolving through two distinct logo generations: an original black-and-white mark introduced at the league’s founding, and a new black-and-white design announced in 2026 as part of a league-wide brand evolution.
Design and History
The J3 League’s first logo was decided at a J.League board meeting on December 17, 2013, alongside the official naming of the division as “J3 League.”[1] The mark combined the J.League “J” symbol, rendered in white with a black outline, with a “3” indicating the third division.[1] The logo was publicly unveiled at a press conference in Tokyo on January 29, 2014, ahead of the league’s inaugural season.[2]
In December 2022, when the J.League renewed its title partnership with Meiji Yasuda Life Insurance, the J3 League’s competition title mark was redesigned with a blue category color, described with the concept of “the blue of the sea, the source of life.”[3] This brought J3 in line with the unified look of the J1 and J2 marks, which used red and green respectively.[4]
On June 13, 2026, the J.League announced that all three divisions would adopt new logos starting with the 2026/27 season, as part of a “brand evolution” tied to the league’s shift to an autumn-spring calendar.[5] The new marks retain the J.League symbol but drop the division-specific colors of red, green, and blue in favor of a black-and-white palette, with the only red remaining inside the J.League symbol itself.[4] The J.League explained that the simplified design was intended to improve legibility and reproducibility across digital and other media, and to let each club’s own colors stand out rather than having the league assert its own color.[5] Use of the new logos began on July 1, 2026.[5]
Meaning and Symbolism
The J.League symbol at the center of the J3 logo has been used since the league’s founding in 1991. It features a white circle representing a soccer ball and a red circle evoking the Japanese flag’s rising sun, while the overall form traces the letter “J.”[6] For the 2026 redesign, the J.League stated that the black-and-white palette carries “the aesthetic of light and shadow that lives in Japan,” positioning the league as a neutral foundation on which the colors of all 60 clubs can shine.[5]
Typography and Design
As part of the 2026 brand evolution, the J.League introduced an original alphanumeric font called “J.League Sans,” designed with strokes that evoke the motion of kicking a ball while remaining harmonious alongside Japanese fonts.[6] The league also created a graphic element called “Flare,” built from arcs and right angles that trace the J.League symbol, intended to convey movement and energy.[6]
