Le Mans FC is a French football club based in Le Mans, Sarthe. The club was founded on 12 June 1985 as Le Mans Union Club 72 (MUC 72), following the merger of Union Sportive du Mans and Stade Olympique du Maine, and adopted its current name in 2010.[1] The club’s visual identity has undergone two significant changes since its founding, each tied to a naming or anniversary event.
Design and History
From its creation in 1985, MUC 72 used an identity built around an hexagonal emblem with red and yellow bands, colors taken from the coat of arms of the city of Le Mans.[1][2]
In December 2009, the club announced it would change its name from Le Mans UC 72 to Le Mans FC, effective 1 July 2010. President Henri Legarda explained that the MUC name was little used outside Sarthe and that the term “Union” no longer applied after the amateur sections of the two founding clubs refused to merge in 2003.[3] The rebrand coincided with the club’s move to the new MMArena stadium.[4]
The new logo was designed by the agency Leroy Tremblot, which specialized in sports identity.[4][5] It featured a red background in the shape of a heart with a horse’s head, replacing the former hexagonal emblem.[3] The colors remained red and yellow, but the new mark introduced the horse as the central symbol.[4]
On 12 June 2025, the club’s 40th anniversary, Le Mans FC unveiled a special anniversary logo for the 2025-2026 season. The club described it as “sang et or” (blood and gold), noting that half of the logo adopts the forms of the current crest with the same typography, while the vertical bars of the numeral 4 recall those of the MUC 72 hexagon.[1][6] The anniversary mark was described as a temporary logo for the season, displayed prominently with the number 40.[2]
Meaning and Symbolism
The horse introduced in the 2010 logo carries multiple layers of meaning tied to the city of Le Mans. President Henri Legarda explained the choice: “To remind that we are at the gates of the Perche, that the club recruits young foals to turn them into thoroughbreds and that Le Mans is a city of horsepower.”[3] The design agency Leroy Tremblot elaborated that the thoroughbred symbolism illustrates three dimensions of the city: the regional dimension with the Perche sarthois, the historical dimension with the Roman enclosure of the city, and the cultural dimension with the reference to horsepower, Le Mans being the home of the automobile.[5]
The red and yellow colors have been constant throughout the club’s identity, derived from the coat of arms of the city of Le Mans.[1] The club is commonly referred to as “Sang et Or” (Blood and Gold), a nickname used in official club communications.[6]
Typography and Design
The 2010 logo abandoned the hexagonal format of the MUC 72 era in favor of a heart-shaped outline with a black border.[3] The wordmark “LE MANS FC” appears above the horse symbol within the crest.[4] The 40th anniversary logo from 2025 deliberately retained the same typography as the current crest while integrating the hexagonal band motif from the MUC 72 era into the numeral 4.[1]
