The Cincinnati Bengals of the National Football League are identified by two distinct visual elements: a tiger-striped helmet that has remained unchanged since 1981, and a primary “B” logo featuring the team’s signature tiger stripes, introduced in 2004. The team’s visual identity has evolved through several distinct uniform and logo eras since the franchise began play in 1968.
Design and History
The Bengals’ original uniform, worn from 1968 through 1979, featured an orange helmet with the word “Bengals” arched across both sides in black block letters with a thin white outline. The team wore black and white jerseys with orange and black striping on the sleeves and pants.[1]
Heading into the 1981 season, the team introduced its now-iconic tiger-striped look, switching from a burnt orange helmet with the word “BENGALS” on both sides to a bright orange and black helmet with six tiger stripes, with the striped pattern continuing throughout the uniform sides.[2] This helmet design has remained unaltered since its introduction.[3]
In 1997, the Bengals introduced a leaping tiger logo, which was added to the sleeves of the jersey. Because the new logo was placed where uniform numbers previously had been, the numbers on the sleeves were moved to the tops of the shoulders.[4]
In March 2004, the Bengals unveiled a new primary logo: an initial “B,” custom designed for the team by NFL Properties, featuring the team’s signature tiger stripes. The team said it would continue to use the leaping tiger and tiger head logos, but logos that included text would be removed from the team’s inventory.[5] The new “B” logo was placed in the center of the chest area of the uniform, just below the neckline, replacing the leaping tiger on the sleeve.[3]
In 2021, the Bengals unveiled their first major uniform redesign since 2004. The design featured “Bengals” written across the chest, replacing the striped “B” logo that had been worn in the same place since 2004.[6] The team worked closely with Nike on the multi-year redesign process, and the striped helmet remained unchanged.[6]
Meaning and Symbolism
When the “B” logo was introduced in 2004, Bengals executive vice president Katie Blackburn explained the design rationale: “People associate the stripes with our team, and we wanted to incorporate that in a new logo. It adds to our inventory of logos with a clean, simple design that has a strong Bengals identity.”[5]
For the 2021 uniform redesign, Nike designers stated they “observed real-life Bengal tigers in motion and redrew the uniform’s stripes to mirror the tiger’s movements while stalking its prey.”[6]
