Lyon Olympique Universitaire Rugby, commonly known as LOU Rugby, is a French professional rugby union club based in Lyon. The club’s visual identity is built around a wolf, a direct reference to the phonetic similarity between the abbreviation “LOU” and the French word “loup,” meaning wolf. The club’s crest features a large white wolf’s head set against red and black, the colors the club has used since 1902.[1]
Design and History
The club traces its origins to 1896, when students from Lyon’s Lycée Ampère founded two teams that later merged into the Racing Club de Lyon. In 1902, the club adopted the name Lyon Olympique along with its red and black colors.[2] The name Lyon Olympique Universitaire was adopted in 1910, giving birth to the LOU acronym.[2]
The first club crest, used until 2009, incorporated the red and black colors, the city of Lyon, and the wolf motif. In 2009, the logo was reworked: the core ideas were retained but the design became more modern and streamlined. The red color became dominant as the central background of the shield, the “pillars” present on the earlier version were removed, and the city name remained inscribed in white lettering across the top of the emblem.[3]
The wolf head remains the central element of the current badge. Kit manufacturer Macron has described the stylized wolf’s head as “the symbol of the French club,” and it has been used as a repeated tone-on-tone graphic across jersey designs.[4]
Meaning and Symbolism
The wolf emblem is a deliberate homonymic construction: the club’s identity was built around the image of the wolf because the abbreviation LOU sounds like “loup” in French. This identity is carried primarily by the club logo, which shows a large white wolf’s head contrasting with the red and black that decorate the rest of the shield.[1] The club’s nickname, Les Loups (The Wolves), reinforces this association.[5]
The red and black colors were adopted in 1902 when the club became Lyon Olympique, and they have remained central to the club’s identity ever since.[2] The club’s official history describes these as “the colors dear to its supporters” that still constitute its identity today.[2]
Typography and Design
Documented descriptions of the current crest note the city name “Lyon” inscribed in white lettering across the upper portion of the emblem, a feature retained from the pre-2009 design.[3] The 2009 redesign simplified the overall form, removing structural elements from the earlier shield while keeping the wolf head and color scheme intact.[3]
