The Texas Legends are the NBA G League affiliate of the Dallas Mavericks, based in Frisco, Texas. The franchise relocated from Colorado, where it had competed as the Colorado 14ers, and began play in Frisco for the 2010-11 season under the Legends name. The team’s visual identity has evolved through two distinct primary logo eras, both built around Mavericks-aligned colors.
Design and History
The original Texas Legends primary logo was unveiled in May 2010. Designed by Torch Creative, a Dallas-based design and graphics company that also created the logo for the 2010 NBA All-Star Game at Cowboys Stadium, the mark featured a bold star appearing to rise and grow larger, with a resulting longhorn-like silhouette. The logo was rendered in blue, silver, black and white, and incorporated a Mavericks color scheme. The franchise’s trademark filing describes the mark as the words “TEXAS LEGENDS” over a basketball with a shooting five-point star in front, where the shooting star represents the letter “T.”[1][2]
In October 2018, the Legends announced a logo change for the 2018-19 season. The new primary mark, previously used as the team’s alternate logo, features a “TL” design in white with a navy blue drop shadow and a navy blue star between the letters. This design sits on a royal blue basketball with silver seams, surrounded by the team name in white within a navy blue circle. The previous primary logo was retained as an alternate mark with its wordmark removed.[3]
In March 2019, the team released a commemorative 10-year anniversary logo for the 2019-20 season. The design features a jersey-style numerical 10 with the primary logo resting inside, held up by a banner marking the 2010-2020 anniversary.[4]
Meaning and Symbolism
The 2018 redesign carries several documented symbolic elements. The “TL” monogram features a winged design representing speed, both the speed of the game and the speed of growth in Frisco and surrounding areas. The star at the heart of the logo represents the Lone Star State. The basketball at the center of the mark includes six lines representing the six pillars of the Legends’ community outreach: military empowerment, cancer research, fighting hunger, youth involvement, creating a brighter future, and international growth of the sport. The ring around the basketball represents the team’s unity with the North Dallas area.[5][3]
The team’s colors, royal blue, navy blue and silver, follow the parent Dallas Mavericks palette. The 10-year anniversary logo was described as staying true to the Legends’ primary logo and colors, “following in the steps of their parent team Dallas Mavericks with deep Dallas navy and royal blue.”[4]
