The Marquette Golden Eagles are the intercollegiate athletic teams of Marquette University in Milwaukee, Wisconsin. The athletics department’s visual identity is built around two distinct marks: an interlocking “MU” monogram that serves as the primary logo, and a separate Golden Eagle graphic used for merchandising and fan engagement.
Design and History
The current nickname and visual identity system date to a period of significant change in the mid-1990s and mid-2000s. Marquette’s teams were known as the Warriors from 1954 to 1994, when the university retired the nickname after it was deemed offensive to Native Americans. Students voted to adopt Golden Eagles in May 1994, choosing it over the alternative “Lightning” from among 1,500 nominations.[1] The university archives list the Golden Eagles nickname as active from 1994 through May 2005, followed by a brief period in May 2005 when the teams were called “Gold,” before Golden Eagles was reinstated on June 29, 2005.[2]
The MU monogram, which remains the department’s primary logo, was first introduced in 2005.[3] It was designed by Rickabaugh Graphics, a Gahanna, Ohio-based design firm that was hired roughly a year and a half earlier to revamp Marquette’s logo and mascot.[4] Eric Rickabaugh, the firm’s owner and creative director, described the monogram as an effort to rally the Marquette community together, saying, “It’s about ‘we are Marquette, not Golden Eagles vs. Warriors.'”[4]
In July 2007, Marquette Athletics introduced a redesigned Golden Eagle graphic, described in the official announcement as “reworked to embody the strength, pride and power that have long symbolized the department’s athletics programs.”[3] The new graphic was developed by Rickabaugh Graphics, the same firm that designed the monogram, and was intended for use in merchandising, completing the department’s licensed logo package. The MU monogram remained the primary logo and continued to appear on uniforms for all 14 intercollegiate teams at the time.[3]
In August 2020, Marquette Athletics introduced “Iggy” as the name for the official Golden Eagle mascot, named after St. Ignatius of Loyola, founder of the Society of Jesus. The announcement noted that new mascot graphics were developed for fan engagement and licensing, and that the MU monogram would continue as the department’s primary logo.[5]
Meaning and Symbolism
The university archives document the Golden Eagle as an official logo from 1994 to the present, following the First Warrior silhouette used from 1985 to 1994 during the Warriors era.[2] The 2007 redesign was explicitly framed around the qualities of “strength, pride and power” that the department said had long symbolized its athletics programs.[3]
Typography and Design
Marquette’s official athletics colors are documented in the department’s brand standards guide. Marquette Blue is specified as Pantone 281 with hex code #003366, and Marquette Gold as Pantone 123 with hex code #FFCC00. The guide also lists a “Championship Blue” alternate color, Pantone 278 with hex code #7AABE4, with separate direction on its permitted use.[6] The university’s brand identity guidelines state that athletics marks were designed for the express use of the Department of Intercollegiate Athletics and Recreational Sports, and that the athletics monogram must never replace the university logo as the official university signature in non-athletics visual materials.[7]
