Pittsburgh Panthers

The Pittsburgh Panthers are the athletic teams of the University of Pittsburgh. Their identity includes the Script Pitt wordmark and a panther head logo, with a new visual identity introduced in 2019 with the Nike Global Identity Group.

The University of Pittsburgh Panthers athletic identity is built around two core marks: the Script Pitt wordmark and a panther head logo. The panther was adopted as the University’s mascot in 1909, when student and alumni leaders chose Felis Concolor, the most formidable creature once indigenous to the Pittsburgh region, according to alumnus George M.P. Baird, who first suggested the idea.[1]

Design and History

In 2019, Pitt Athletics introduced a new visual identity developed over a two-year collaboration with the Nike Global Identity Group.[2] The new Panther Head logo was designed as a culmination of the panther statues spread across campus, with a forward-facing angle that nods to the panther fountain at the front entrance of the Cathedral of Learning.[1] The mark serves as a secondary logo alongside the Script Pitt, which remains the primary athletic mark.[3]

The Script Pitt was originally created by Coach Johnny Majors to breathe fresh life into the football program. It lasted 24 years and was worn during Pitt’s golden era, including the 1976 National Championship season. It was reintroduced in 2016 to reignite the Athletic Department’s program and became the springboard for the 2019 overhaul of the entire identity system.[3]

Before the 2019 rebrand, Pitt’s primary logo was an arching block-style PITT, first introduced in 2005.[4] That mark replaced a previous identity that had used the full “Pittsburgh” name, reversing a 1997 decision by former athletic director Steve Petersen.[5]

In 2007, the torch-cut Panther head first unveiled in 1997 was reintroduced with a sleeker, more polished look. That update was the result of creative efforts by the Pitt Athletic Department and the Collegiate Licensing Company (CLC).[4]

Meaning and Symbolism

The 2019 Panther Head logo draws on the sculptural aesthetic of panther statues across campus, capturing their aggressiveness in the new mark. Design cues in the logo visually connect to the arched motif of the Cathedral of Learning.[1] The Cathedral of Learning’s Neo-Gothic pointed arch motif became a natural extension embedded into the new elements of the identity.[6]

The royal blue and gold colors introduced in 2019 are a reinterpretation of the palette made famous during Pitt’s golden era of football. Those colors were originally introduced by Coach Johnny Majors to sharpen up the uniforms and stand out from rival Notre Dame, which shared the navy and old gold colors at the time.[1] The new versions were created to be easily reproduced and drive a consistent look across all mediums.[1]

Typography and Design

As part of the 2019 identity system, custom alpha and numeral sets were designed for athletic communications. The Cathedral Font takes inspiration from the parallel lines and pointed arches found in the Gothic architecture of the Cathedral of Learning, with pointed arches reserved for letterforms where a curvature would naturally occur.[6] A custom linear pattern called the Cathedral Stripe was also designed as a distinguishing brand element, using a repeat of pointed arches as a literal nod to the building.[7]

Pitt’s official athletic colors are Pitt Blue (Pantone 661) and Pitt Gold (Pantone 1235).[8] The University’s institutional primary colors are PMS 1235 (Pitt Gold) and PMS 661 (Royal Blue).[9]
