AC Monza is an Italian football club based in Monza, Lombardy, founded on September 1, 1912. The club adopted its current red and white colors in 1928, having previously played in white and blue.[1] The current crest is a red shield with a white border, featuring the club name and two historic Monza symbols: the Iron Crown (Corona Ferrea) at the top and a vertical Visconti sword beneath the lettering.[2]
Design and History
The club’s visual identity has undergone several changes tied to corporate restructurings and renamings. After a bankruptcy in 2015, the club was refounded as S.S.D. Monza 1912 and adopted a new logo that retained the traditional elements: the Iron Crown at the top, the single sword of Estorre Visconti cutting through the founding year “1912”, and a shield shape described as a triangle with bent sides. The main change was the corporate name, which shifted from “AC Monza Brianza” on two lines to “S.S.d. Monza” on a single line, with outlines changing from white to black.[3]
In April 2019, following the acquisition by Fininvest, the club unveiled a new kit and a new corporate logo reading “AC MONZA”, which retained the traditional Iron Crown and Visconti sword.[4][2] The club’s denomination officially changed back to Associazione Calcio Monza on July 1, 2019.[1]
On August 24, 2021, the club announced a “small but significant restyling” of its official logo: the addition of a red outline enclosing the white border that surrounds the red shield. The club released an updated brand manual with new logo files in PNG and vector formats.[5]
Meaning and Symbolism
The crest’s two central symbols are directly tied to Monza’s local heritage. The Iron Crown (Corona Ferrea) is a historic relic kept in Monza Cathedral and one of the city’s most important symbols.[3] The sword is associated with Estorre Visconti, a medieval figure linked to Monza and the Visconti period.[3] The founding year 1912 is inscribed within the shield, cut through by the sword.[3]
