Veria NFC is a Greek football club based in Veria, Greece, founded on 17 July 2019 as a new professional club following the collapse of the city’s historic club, GAS Veria.[1] The club’s visual identity was created under unusual circumstances, shaped by legal constraints that forced a complete break from its predecessor’s branding.
Design and History
When Veria NFC was established in 2019, the league, on recommendation from FIFA, imposed a redesign of the team’s emblem and a change of colours. This was done to avoid potential legal issues related to GAS Veria’s rights over its logo and colours (blue and red), ensuring no link was created with the old club.[2]
As a result, Veria adopted a new crest based on the colours white, black, grey and gold.[2] The crest features a “B” standing for the city of Veria, a crown representing the club’s nickname “Queen of the North”, and “2019” indicating the year of the club’s foundation.[1]
During the 2022-2023 season, the club returned to the traditional colours of its predecessor, blue and red, and eventually also reclaimed its nickname.[2] The club’s 2022-23 home kit, for example, featured blue and red stripes with yellow accents.[3]
Meaning and Symbolism
For the original 2019 crest, the club documented specific meanings for each colour: black represented the dynamism of the team in the new era, white stood for pure moral values and the financial stability of the club, grey represented the fans as the soul of the club, and gold signified the radiance, prestige and glamour of the new association.[2]
