The NBA G League is the official minor league development system of the National Basketball Association, operating as the NBA’s primary talent pipeline since its founding in 2001. The league’s visual identity has undergone two significant transformations, most recently in 2017 when Gatorade became the first entitlement partner in U.S. professional sports league history.
Design and History
The league was founded in 2001 as the National Basketball Development League (NBDL) with eight teams. In 2005, the name was changed to the NBA Development League (NBA D-League) as part of a new collective bargaining agreement with the NBA and a bid to show the connection to the NBA.[1]
The most significant rebrand came in February 2017, when the NBA and Gatorade announced a multiyear expanded partnership that renamed the league the NBA Gatorade League (NBA G-League) beginning with the 2017-18 season. This marked the first time a U.S. professional sports league named an entitlement partner.[2] The name was officially shortened to “NBA G League” prior to the season.[1]
As part of the partnership, the NBA and Gatorade unveiled a new NBA G-League logo that would be featured across all game balls, team jerseys, on-court signage, and league digital assets.[2] The new logo was introduced in black-and-white, featuring a white silhouette of a basketball player mid-dunk against a black background, framed by a rounded vertical rectangle. Gatorade’s “G” logo with an orange lightning bolt was added to the bottom right corner.[3][4]
The dunking player silhouette carried over from the previous D-League identity, though it was slightly altered in the 2017 update.[3] The league’s official site continues to use this primary mark, with the league operating 30 affiliated teams as of the 2024-25 season.[5]
Meaning and Symbolism
The “G” in the league’s name and logo directly references Gatorade, the league’s title sponsor and a founding partner of the NBA D-League.[2] The Gatorade “G” mark with its orange lightning bolt appears in the bottom right corner of the primary logo, serving as the sponsor’s signature within the league’s identity.[3][4]
The dunking player silhouette, retained from the D-League era, visually communicates the league’s developmental purpose: preparing players for the NBA. The NBA’s official announcement described the league as “the NBA’s official minor league, preparing players, coaches, officials, trainers, and front-office staff for the NBA while acting as the league’s research and development laboratory.”[2]
Typography and Design
The 2017 logo shifted to a black-and-white palette with the dunking player rendered as a white silhouette against a black background, framed by a rounded vertical rectangle. The only color accent in the primary mark comes from Gatorade’s “G” logo, which features an orange lightning bolt.[3][4]
An alternate logo introduced in the 2017-18 season uses the same white dunking player silhouette on a black rounded rectangle outlined in white, with the league name “NBA G League” listed beside it in white.[6]
For the league’s 25th season in 2026, an anniversary logo was introduced featuring the dunking player silhouette from the primary logo on a black circle with a silver “25” to the left, with “NBA G LEAGUE” and “25TH SEASON” arched above and below in black.[7]
