NJ/NY Gotham FC is the National Women’s Soccer League club that emerged from a complete rebrand of Sky Blue FC in April 2021. The new identity, unveiled on April 6, 2021, paired a new name with a new crest designed by Matthew Wolff, a New York City native whose family is from New Jersey. Wolff has developed crests for several Major League Soccer clubs and other professional clubs worldwide.[1]
Design and History
The club, originally founded in 2006 as Jersey Sky Blue, competed as Sky Blue FC before the 2021 transformation.[2] The rebrand followed a fan-centric process that included surveys, focus groups and conversations with supporters and season members.[1]
The new crest features the Statue of Liberty’s iconic crown sitting atop the crest. The crown was voted by fans as the most recognizable symbol of both New Jersey and New York.[3] The crest center displays three letters in sky blue coloring: an “N” and a hybrid “J/Y,” which acknowledges New Jersey as the club’s birthplace while embracing the club’s growing New York reach.[1] The monogram can be read as “NY” or “NJ.”[2]
SportsLogos.Net describes the primary crest as a black shield with the crown of the Statue of Liberty above in black and liberty green, with the N and hybrid J/Y monogram inside the shield.[4]
Meaning and Symbolism
According to the club’s official announcement, the Statue of Liberty’s crown represents Gotham FC’s ambitions to be an international club and provides a welcoming symbol for the team’s diverse fanbase.[1] The hybrid J/Y monogram symbolizes the club’s reach across both New Jersey and New York.[3]
The official colors of the club are Sky Blue, Gotham Black and Cloud White. As overwhelmingly requested by fans and in honor of the club’s roots, Gotham FC retained elements of the previous year’s updated color scheme. The colors represent the team’s history and prior identity, the club’s new identity, and the longstanding foundation of the club’s supporters group, Cloud 9.[1]
In 2024, following the club’s 2023 NWSL Championship victory, a star was added above the crest on the primary kit.[5] For the 2025 secondary kit, the club debuted a monochrome, matte-black expression of the crest.[6]
