Pescara Calcio, officially known as Delfino Pescara 1936, is an Italian football club based in the coastal city of Pescara in the Abruzzo region. The club’s visual identity is built around the dolphin, a direct reference to the sea and the city’s coastal location, a connection reinforced by the club’s full name, Delfino Pescara 1936.[1]
Design and History
The club’s colors have been white and light blue since its founding on July 4, 1936, the same colors found on the municipal coat of arms of the city of Pescara.[2][1] The logo reflects the city’s topography: the blue of the sea, the white of the wave crest, and the dolphin as the symbol.[2]
The current badge is a shield-shaped crest featuring the club name across the top and the year 1936 at the bottom. The central image is a large white dolphin drawn in motion over two shades of blue.[3]
The dolphin mark is widely attributed to Italian designer Piero Gratton, who created stylized logos for several Italian clubs in the late 1970s and 1980s, including the Roma “lupetto,” the Bari rooster, and the Palermo eagle.[4][5] The Pescara dolphin has been in use since 1983.[6]
However, the official club website has noted that some sources attribute the current logo’s authorship to Gabriele Pomilio, another figure in the art and graphics world, and has stated that it was in contact with graphic designers and archives to clarify the matter.[7]
Meaning and Symbolism
The dolphin is the team’s symbol, a clear reference to the sea and the coastal city of Pescara.[1] The club’s white and light blue colors directly reflect the colors of the city of Pescara’s coat of arms.[1]
