FC Pyunik is an Armenian football club based in Yerevan, competing in the Armenian Premier League. The club’s name translates from Armenian as “Phoenix,” a mythical bird, a naming choice that directly informs the club’s visual identity and crest design.[1]
Design and History
FC Pyunik’s visual identity has undergone several distinct phases since the club’s founding. Following the club’s reappearance in 2001, Pyunik introduced an iconic logo design featuring a bold letter “P” placed on top of a football. This design was retained for 13 years.[2]
In 2014, the club introduced a double-headed golden phoenix crest. This change proved unpopular among fans, prompting the club to introduce a new badge in 2019. The 2019 design returned to the original round shape, featuring a predominantly blue logo with a red phoenix in the center.[2]
Meaning and Symbolism
The club’s name, Pyunik, is the Armenian word for “Phoenix,” the mythical bird that rises from its own ashes.[1] The phoenix motif featured in the club’s crests, including the double-headed golden phoenix of 2014 and the red phoenix at the center of the 2019 badge, directly reflects this naming symbolism.[2]
